Dishui Nanyin is one of the traditional singing performances in Guangdong, mostly performed by blind artists in restaurants, teahouses, or private occasions. It was widely popular in Hong Kong at the beginning of the 20th century. Though recognized as an intangible part of Hong Kong’s cultural heritage, since its singing skills are only passed on through word of mouth, it is in danger of being lost.
Apart from introducing Dishui Nanyin, Ms. TONG Siu-yin is going to perform the excerpts from the popular "Away from the Road". Participants can also try out classic pieces and learn to appreciate Dishui Nanyin through this lecture.
Speaker: TONG Siu-yin, currently the chairman of " The Heaven of Angels", is one of the few dishui artists performing in Hong Kong today. She is fully engaged in inheriting and preservation of the Dishui Nanyin. For many years, in addition to teaching the art, on the first Saturday night of each month, she will hold a live performance at the Flagstaff House Museum of Tea Ware. In 2019 and 2020, she successfully obtained the support of the Intangible Cultural Heritage Funding Scheme of the Hong Kong Leisure and Cultural Services Department to carry out promotional activities of Dishui Nanyin in Hong Kong.
