Congratulations have poured in for alumna Ms Grace Lau Mo-Sheung after she secured the world's number one ranking in female kata.
“We are proud of Grace for taking the world’s top spot in her sport,” said Professor Freddy Boey, President of City University of Hong Kong (CityU), speaking on behalf of the entire University community.
“Her perseverance to push boundaries fully embraces the spirit of our CityU heroes. We are proud and excited to see her breaking Hong Kong's karate history and personal records again,” he said.
According to the World Karate Federation, Grace rose to the top of the world’s female karate rankings with 7,125 points, surpassing a Japanese athlete. She had an exciting journey in 2023. She won her first Gold medal in the Women’s Kata event in the Asian Karate Federation (AKF) Senior Championships 2023, a Bronze medal at the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou, and her first Silver medal at the World Championships in Budapest.
More than 1,200 student-athletes, including Grace, have been admitted to CityU through the Student Athletes Admission Scheme, which was set up in 1997. Before she graduated, she led the CityU Women’s Karate Team to win the team Gold medal in competitions against local universities.
She was named USFHK Sportswoman of the Year in 2014 and 2015.
