Under the leadership of President Way Kuo, City University of Hong Kong (CityU) is one of the very few universities in Asia that advocates the spirit of excellence in academics, sports and music.
The world-class faculty at CityU is well recognised by various international rankings. The percentage of its faculty listed in the top 2% of the most cited scientists in the world is among the top 100 in the world, while only very few faculty from other universities in Asia made the list. At the same time, CityU student-athletes have dominated sports in the tertiary education sector over the past 15 years, winning seven out of 12 Grand Slams in a local sports league for universities.
Fifty student-athletes have been admitted this year. President Kuo together with the CityU management team welcomed them on 29 October. They included: Sean Glass, wheelchair fencing, Ho Kwan-kit, table tennis, Reginald Lee Chun-hei, badminton, Leung Sze-lok, badminton, Lo Sum-man, karate, Lui Lok-lok, badminton, and Pau Yik-man, table tennis.
President Kuo said at the welcoming ceremony that an outstanding university was not defined by encompassing all disciplines. Instead, faculty and students at an ideal university should excel academically, and enjoy sports and music. At the end of the ceremony, he led the participants in chanting the CityU sports team slogan “Be The Best That We Can Be”.
President Kuo embodies this spirit of multidisciplinary excellence. He has led the CityU marathon team at the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon for 12 consecutive years, except in 2020 and 2022 because of COVID-19.
