Fifteen academic subjects at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) have been ranked in the top 50 in the world, according to the ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) 2022, while Library and Information Science is ranked 2nd globally. These results place CityU 1st among Hong Kong universities for five consecutive years in terms of the highest number of subjects included in the top 50 GRAS list, signifying once again the University’s excellence and strengths.
In addition to the 15 subjects ranked in the top 50 (details shown in the table below), CityU has a total of 35 subjects listed in the overall GRAS ranking. Eight are ranked 1st in Hong Kong, including Library & Information Science, Automation & Control, Nanoscience & Nanotechnology, Energy Science & Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, and Public Administration.
In particular, Library & Information Science ranked 2nd globally exemplifies the University’s emphasis on interdisciplinarity because its research achievements result from joint efforts in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Science, and related areas.

In summary, 23 of the 35 subjects listed in the overall GRAS ranking are ranked in the top 100, and 15 in the top 50. The Engineering discipline at CityU attained the best performance, with 16 subjects included and 11 of them listed in the top 50. Next was the Social Sciences discipline, with 12 subjects included and four of them listed in the top 50, while six subjects in the Natural Science discipline and one subject in Life Sciences were listed.
GRAS was first published by the higher education evaluation agency ShanghaiRanking in 2017. It contains rankings for universities in 54 subjects across Natural Sciences, Engineering, Life Sciences, Medical Sciences, and Social Sciences. It uses a range of objective academic indicators to measure the performance of world universities in their respective subjects, including international academic awards, research output, research quality, and international collaboration. More than 4,000 universities around the world are evaluated every year, and more than 1,800 universities in 90 countries and regions are listed.
