Staff and students were given a very warm welcome when they returned to campus at the start of the new semester on 13 January at City University of Hong Kong (CityU).
A series of activities organised by Student Development Services made the first day back for semester B as smooth as possible.
Professor Way Kuo, President of CityU, played a key role in the welcoming activities. On 14 January, he presented gift packs of cookies and welcoming cards to staff and students alongside the student ambassadors.
In addition, along with other senior management members, he checked on security measures at all campus access points and visited a catering outlet on campus.
“At the beginning of the new semester, let’s work together, all of us, to restore campus and reignite our passion for learning, teaching and research,” said President Kuo as he extended his wish for a pleasant start to the new semester for all CityU members.
Many of the staff and students said they understood the need for the enhanced security measures and were looking forward to the start of the new term.
Activities included the popular “welcoming treats” stations at the Yeung Kin Man Academic Building where popcorn, coffee and soft drinks were handed out to staff and students. In addition, quotes from renowned contemporary and historical figures displayed on 17 electronic screens at the Bank of China (Hong Kong) Complex encouraged students to study hard during the new semester.
“I feel excited about the new semester, although the last term ended in a rush because of the unrest. I have high hopes that this semester I’ll also connect with new people and do a lot of new things,” said Muhammad Danish, a Year 1 student in the School of Data Science.
The harmonious atmosphere was heightened at a lunchtime concert on 17 January when the staff band Casual Listening performed well-known pop songs and original material.
