There would be no roofs of Paris without the craftsmen who build them and restore them. The art of the roofer is first documented in 1286 and has remained true to its origins over the last nine centuries. Working high above the streets, the master craftsmen shape, remove, install, and attach all the elements that make up a roof: the gutter, spouts, chimney covers, and of course the ceramic, slate, zinc, and copper tiles and sheets. To appreciate the skill and mastery needed to accomplish this task, this section displays some of the original instruments and materials used today as well as short videos and images of the craftsmen at work.
