Alumni Patrick Lau and Rex Law, both graduates of Applied Sociology, founded Snaildy Education in 2019, an educational technology social enterprise dedicated to supporting students with special educational needs (SEN). The duo, with the assistance from the CityUHK community, have created a digital platform to help teachers monitor the learning progress of SEN students. They also digitised the documentation for SEN students, alleviating the cumbersome paperwork that burdened teachers, thereby allowing students to receive more timely support. Their efforts and contributions were recognised by Forbes 30 Under 30 (Asia) 2024.

Patrick, who suffers from a hearing impairment in his left ear due to an infection during childhood, feels a deep sense of empathy and responsibility towards SEN students. He teamed up with Rex, who shares the passion for helping the underprivileged, to establish the start-up.

During their entrepreneurial journey, they encountered the outbreak of the pandemic when schools urgently needed to adopt IT solutions for teaching and managing data. Patrick and Rex were grateful for the support from CityUHK, including the mentoring, IT resources and financial support through the HK Tech 300 Angel Fund.

The name of their social enterprise “Snaildy” is derived from “snail” and “study”, symbolising the idea of learning in their own pace, like a snail, and eventually achieving their goals. “The unconventional journey may not be easy, but the scenery along the way is bound to be unique and inspiring,” said the duo.
