金耀基院士 (Academician Ambrose King Yeo-chi)

金耀基，浙江天台縣人。一九四九年到臺灣。臺灣大學法學士，政治大學政治研究所碩士，美國匹茲堡大學哲學博士。一九七O年開始在香港中文大學任教，一九七七年至一九八五年間任中大新亞學院院長，先後在英國劍橋大學，美國麻省理工學院和德國海德堡大學從事研究訪問。一九八三年任香港中文大學社會學講座教授，一九八九年任香港中文大學副校長，一九九四年當選臺灣中央研究院院士。二OO二年到二OO四年任香港中文大學校長。

金院士主要的研究興趣為中國現代化及傳統在社會、文化轉變中的角色。著述包括《大學之理念》、《從傳統到現代》、《中國社會與文化》、《中國政治與文化》、《中國現代化與知識份子》及《劍橋語絲》、《海德堡語絲》、《敦煌語絲》等。

金教授自幼練習書法。年自中大退休之後，重新提筆，寫書法也成了他近來的修為之一，侯軍曾評論其在筆墨之間「中鋒行筆，骨力剛勁，神采畢現」。金教授認為「中國文化最終還是表達在書法裡」，退休之後的他，在筆墨書香中頤情養志，追尋傳統的人文精神。

Professor Ambrose Yeo-chi King is a renowned sociologist. After obtaining his PhD from the University of Pittsburgh, USA in 1970, Professor King joined the Department of Sociology of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. From 1977 to 1985, he served as Head of New Asia College and in 1989 he became Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University. In 1994, he was elected Academician of Academia Sinica in Taiwan. From 2002 to 2004, he was appointed as Vice-Chancellor of CUHK.

His research interest encompasses the Chinese modernity and the role of culture in China’s modern transformation. He has authored quite a number of books including《大學之理念》(The Idea of University); 《從傳統到現代》(From Traditional to Modernised); 《中國社會與文化》(Chinese Society and Culture); 《中國政治與文化》(Chinese Politics and Culture); 《中國現代化與知識份子》 (The modernization of China and intellectuals); 《劍橋語絲》(Cambridge Musings); 《海德堡語絲》 (Heidelberg Musings); 《敦煌語絲》(Dunhuang Musings) , etc.

Professor King has practised calligraphy when he was a child and retakes calligraphy brush after retirement. He has been enthralled by calligraphy, pursuing the traditional literati spirit and refreshment for the mind in brush, ink and paper.
