Miss ZHU Jingyi, a PhD student of Prof. Leo Chan, Visiting Associate Professor of BMS, recently received the prestigious WESTPAC Best Young Scientist Oral Presentation 2024 award at the2nd UN Ocean Decade Regional Conference and 11th WESTPAC International Marine Science Conference.

The conference, with the theme “Accelerating Ocean Science Solutions for Sustainable Development” this year, took place in Thailand during 22–25 May 2024. It focused on promoting ocean sustainability in the densely populated Western Pacific region, which hosts significant marine biodiversity, aiming to address challenges such as resource depletion, marine pollution, and climate change through collaboration and transformative ocean-based solutions. The WESTPAC Best Young Scientist Oral Presentation Award, recognises the exceptional oral presentation by Jingyi, acknowledges the talent and effort of young scientists and encourages excellence in scientific research and communication within the marine science community. Jingyi will receive full financial support for her participation in the next WESTPAC International Marine Science Conference, along with recognition for her outstanding work and dedication.

The award was granted for Jingyi’s outstanding presentation titled “The occurrence, trophodynamics, and potential health risks of marine lipophilic phycotoxins in coral reef fish of representative small island developing states.” This research sheds light on the presence and potential hazards of marine lipophilic phycotoxins in coral reef fish, providing valuable insights for small island developing states. Jingyi’s achievement underscores her dedication to marine science and commitment to understanding the health risks associated with marine ecosystems.

Congratulations to Zhu Jingyi on this well-deserved recognition!
