The State Key Laboratory of Biotherapy of Sichuan University in Chengdu is one of the top biomedical research institutions in China. The institute is also affiliated with one of China’s biggest hospital – West China Hospital and has recently become a National Collaborative Innovation Center.
Six professors from the State Key Laboratory of Biotherapy visited the Department of Biomedical Sciences (BMS) on 1 June 2015. The first joint research meeting between the two institutions was held at CityU on that day.
During the meeting, Prof. Michael Yang, Head of BMS, gave an introduction of CityU and the department. And Prof. Shengyong Yang gave an overview of the State Key Laboratory of Biotherapy. Members of BMS and the State Key Laboratory gave presentations about their research projects.
A variety of research topics of common interest to both sides, including drug development, cancer biology, chemical biology, stem cells, biomaterials and novel therapeutics, were covered at the meeting. The two sides also discussed opportunities for collaboration among research groups and between the two institutions.
Of note Dr Mingliang He, Associated Professor of BMS, already holds joint research grant, under the 973 Program (also known as National Basic Research Development Program), with Prof. Canhua Huang (the Chief Scientist of the program project) of the State Key Laboratory of Biotherapy. This meeting would be a good start for deeper collaboration between the two institutions.
