The faculty members of the Department of Biomedical Sciences (BMS) have visited the Nano and Advanced Materials Institute Limited (NAMI), which is located at the beautiful seaside campus of Hong Kong Science Park. NAMI, “Your Materials Expert”, is an independent R&D center funded by the Hong Kong Government and industry. Established in 2006, NAMI was designated by the Innovation and Technology Commission as a Research and Development Centre for nanotechnology and advanced materials.

BMS already have close links with NAMI. Prof. Shuk Han Cheng is a member of the Board of Directors and Prof. Michael Yang is serving as an advisor of NAMI. BMS also has a strong tradition in research on nanotechnology. For example, Prof. Michael Yang’s group has developed various nanoparticle-based drug delivery systems and Prof. Xi Yao’s research is focused on developing novel biocompatible nanomaterials for a wide range of biomedical applications. The purpose of this trip is to further explore potential collaboration opportunities between the two institutions.

During the visit, Prof. Michael Yang, head of BMS, gave an introduction about the department to the senior members of the host institute including Mr. Daniel Yu, CEO of NAMI, Prof. Connie Kwok, Director of Research and Development (Bio and Healthcare Products), and Ms. Jenny Yiu, Director of Public Affairs and Development. Faculty members of BMS, including Prof. Xi Yao, Prof. Jianbo Yue, Prof. Eddie Ma, Prof. Terrence Lau and Prof. Linfeng Huang have presented their research projects to the host members. The two sides have discussed potential forms of collaborations including joint R&D projects, sharing of research expertise and facilities and exchange of students.
