About the Work
LO Keng Chi, now 40, has suffered from an undiagnosed condition for 20 years. Although he is highly sensitive to light and noise, he copes with the accompanying pain and discomfort daily and tries his best to live on. “See Without Seeing” documents LO’s trip to St. Louis in the United States of America (USA): Accompanied by his mother, he is determined to try alternative treatments that may alleviate his condition, even if it means travelling to the other side of the globe. The film is 40 minutes long. As all scenes are captured using a 360º camera, viewers can place themselves right next to LO as the events unfold in the USA, sharing his experiences in his search for treatment for his neurotic pain and the difficulties he faces along the way.
In a 360º video, viewers can look up and down and even turn around, as if they were there, inside the scene. This level of immersion faithfully recreates the raw atmosphere and emotions: helplessness, anxiety, doubt that the documented subjects experienced. Yet, like any other film, the viewer is but a spectator to these events, powerless and unable to change anything. Though the audience is no longer limited to their seats: In our Gallery 360, viewers can stand up and walk around to explore to find their angle as the film is being played. Alternatively, the film can also be experienced by viewing through a compatible virtual reality headset. “See Without Seeing” is about a person: LO Keng Chi, where his pursuits brought him all the way to the USA.
This is his story, as it happened. A tale not told, but to be experienced.
