Developing Young Learners With and Without Special Needs – Curriculum Innovation and Early Intervention

Developing Programmes that Foster Young People’s Self-control

Young Learners with New Kindergarten Education Curriculum Guide
The impact focuses on curriculum innovation on diverse needs of young learners under six years old. Dr. Hui led a team of scholars, educators (principals and teachers), government officials in drafting the new Curriculum Guide on Kindergarten Education in the Curriculum Development Council of the Education Bureau, HKSAR from 2015-17. Her research evidence on arts enriched pedagogy and creativity development of young children in several studies have informed the education field in recognizing and promoting arts and creativity in kindergarten education. In the newly published official document Kindergarten Education Curriculum Guide (EDB, 2017), the original learning area “arts” has expanded to “arts and creativity” in the curriculum framework. The new curriculum is implemented in all kindergartens under the Free Quality Kindergarten Education policy beginning in Sept. 2017. The number of kindergartens was 1,014 with a student enrollment of 184,032 young children in 2016-17.

Young Learners with Special Needs – Early Intervention Effective and Crucial

Dr. Hui has recently led an interdisciplinary team to evaluate a pilot scheme on On-Site Pre-School Rehabilitation Services (OPRS) which was a new scheme to provide early intervention services to young children with special needs from 2016-2018. The positive impacts on child outcomes have provided strong evidence to regularize the service from 2018. Information on the services, Chinese and English version of the full report can be retrieved from the following government website

The study is reported in the College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences’ CITY CLASS Magazine in both Chinese and English
