CCCL Director Professor Wang Jiangyu discussed Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou’s suit against HSBC before a Hong Kong court to seek access to documents relating to her extradition case. In response to the question whether the Hong Kong court was compelled to favour Meng, Wang argued that Hong Kong has an independent judicial system which is unlikely to face any pressure for interference from Beijing. He also analysed why the Chinese government “does not need Hong Kong’s court to please it in each and every case”.
