2024 APCA Annual Conference

18-19 November 2024 – Hong Kong

The Crossvergence of Asian Copyright Standards?

Call For Abstracts

The Asian Pacific Copyright Association (APCA) is pleased to partner with the School of Law at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) to host its 2024 annual conference in Hong Kong SAR, People’s Republic of China.

Conference Theme: The Crossvergence of Asian Copyright Standards?

This year’s theme, “The Crossvergence of Asian Copyright Standards?” addresses the unique blend of convergence and divergence in copyright regulatory standards across the diverse jurisdictions of the Asian-Pacific region. We aim to explore how different jurisdictions are shaping their copyright laws and theories to meet new challenges and local needs.

As highlighted by Prof. Peter Yu during his keynote address at the 2023 APCA Annual Conference in Bangkok, the region is likely to see “regulatory crossvergence”—a simultaneous convergence and divergence of regulatory standards. We invite submissions that examine and compare the development of copyright laws and theories in different Asian and Pacific jurisdictions, exploring both the similarities (convergence) and differences (divergence), and the underlying reasons.

Possible topics include but are not limited to:

  • Evolution of copyright laws and theories in various Asian and Pacific jurisdictions
  • Comparative analyses of copyright exceptions and limitations
  • Impact of AI and machine learning on copyright law and jurisdictional responses
  • Regulatory responses to new communication technologies and digital platforms
  • Protection of Indigenous culture and cultural heritage within Asian copyright law
  • Handling of orphan works and the role of libraries and educational institutions in the digital era
  • Balancing protection for creators with fostering innovation in the digital age
  • Case studies of significant copyright disputes and their implications for law and policy
