Asian Law Schools Association (ALSA) Empirical Legal Scholarship Workshop for Junior Scholars

In order to promote empirical legal studies, nurture junior scholars (including post-doctoral fellows and PhD students) who are interested in empirical methodology and provide a platform for them to learn about the new developments in empirical legal studies, the inaugural Asian Law Schools Association (ALSA) Empirical Legal Scholarship Workshop for Junior Scholars hosted by School of Law of City University of Hong Kong (CityU SLW) was held on 22 June 2021. The Forum also hopes to increase the sense of community among legal scholars in empirical studies and to promote the application of social science research methods in legal research.

With the challenges posed by Covid-19, the corresponding rise in online learning, and improvements in education technology, ALSA’s first academic symposium on the topic of “New Challenges and New Opportunities in Legal Education” was timely. The symposium was jointly organized by the law schools of Jilin University and City University of Hong Kong. More than 15 excellent papers were presented over a wide range of topics including publishing research on legal education; student evaluations of teaching during the pandemic and potential alternative measures of teaching quality; legal ethics and clinics; digital tools for student engagement; user interfaces in virtual classrooms; and the role of technology in legal education and innovative teaching methodologies.
