Waves are shaped by the wind through friction with the sea as well as by the pressure difference between the wind and the lee side of the wave. These waves can propagate over very long distances, accumulating considerable mechanical energy. Waves symbolize the power of the oceans.
We now have the technology to capture energy from the waves, as a clean and renewable electricity-producing alternative. Back in 1993, the World Energy Council estimated the worldwide extractable amount of energy from the waves at 2 TW.
