In a move to enhance academic collaboration and attract talented students, Professor LI Xiao from the Department of Physics (PHY) at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) conducted a successful outreach visit to Wuhan University's School of Physics and Technology from October 15-16, 2024.
The visit featured an engaging information-sharing session where Prof Li showcased CityUHK's cutting-edge postgraduate programs to enthusiastic undergraduate students, including the PhD program and the new MSc program called the “Master of Science in Physics with Data Modelling and Quantum Technologies.” Highlighting the university's commitment to academic excellence, he also detailed various funding opportunities, including several postgraduate scholarships and the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS).
Prof Li emphasized PHY's vibrant research environment through its numerous academic events, including the Department's flagship "Celebration of Physics - PHY Annual Symposium" and significant conferences such as the 2023 Joint Annual Conference of Physical Societies in Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (YGA2023) and the “2024 APS March Meeting in Hong Kong” event.
"Our department offers unparalleled opportunities for international exposure," Prof Li noted, pointing to the prestigious Joint Degree program with Columbia University and frequent visits by world-renowned scientists. He shared a compelling example from July 2024, where he took one of his PhD students to attend an exclusive two-week program at the prestigious Aspen Center for Physics in Colorado, USA, providing direct interaction with leading researchers in the field.
The session featured a powerful testimonial from HUANG Ke, a successful HKPFS PhD candidate recruited from Wuhan University studying under Prof Li's supervision. Huang highlighted the global research opportunities at CityUHK, having authored 11 papers during his three-year studies at CityUHK, many through international collaborations. "The exposure to global expertise and collaborative research opportunities at CityUHK has been transformative for my academic career," Huang reflected.
Looking toward future collaboration, Prof Li met with Prof WANG Ziyu, Associate Dean of Wuhan University's School of Physics and Technology, to explore the possibility of establishing an undergraduate exchange program for physics students between the two institutions. This initiative aims to create more opportunities for academic exchange and strengthen the bonds between these prestigious institutions.
The visit underscores CityUHK's commitment to fostering international academic partnerships and providing world-class educational opportunities for aspiring physicists. Through such outreach efforts, the Department of Physics and College of Science continue to build bridges with leading institutions and attract exceptional talent to its programs.
