The Physics Department welcomed a delegation from the South China University of Technology (SCUT) for a half-day visit on 21 July 2023. The purpose of the visit was to foster academic exchange and collaboration between the two institutions, as well as to showcase the programmes and laboratory facilities of CityU Physics.
The visit kicked off with an introduction of CityU Physics by Prof. Yang Ren, Head of Department and Chair Professor of Physics. He highlighted the achievements and strengths of the Department in research and education to give the participants a thorough insight of CityU Physics. Following by 3 fascinating and insightful talks delivered by our faculty members on different research themes and topics, the participants grabbed this valuable chance to taste the unique study experience in CityU. Prof. Ge Zhang gave a talk on "Theoretical and Computational Physics - Correlation between entropy and generalizability in neural networks". Prof. Zhedong Zhang presented his work on "Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics - Emerging quantum condensations in nonequilibrium materials: entanglement and beyond". Prof. Junzhang Ma shared his insights on the topic of "Quantum Materials - Emergence of quasiparticles in quantum materials".
After the talks, Prof. Chai Yu, Deputy Programme Leader of the MSc Applied Physics, introduced the programme structure, curriculum, admission requirements and career prospects of the programme. He also showcased some of the student projects and achievements under the faculties' supervision. Prof. Haixing Li, Deputy Research Degree Coordinator, then introduced our Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme. She explained the research areas, supervision arrangements, funding opportunities, and graduation requirements of the programmes. She also highlighted some of the recent research publications and awards by CityU Physics research students.
The Physics Lab was the last stop of the visit. The delegation visited Prof. Danfeng Li’s, Prof. Haixing Li’s and Prof. Yu Chai’s labs in groups, and the lab personnel demonstrated their work to the delegation and explained the story behind the equipment. The delegation was amazed by the state-of-the-art equipment and the experiments in different physics fields that CityU Physics researchers were conducting.
The visit was a fruitful and enjoyable experience for the delegation from SCUT, as they were able to expand their horizon. Simultaneously, the Department had this precious opportunity to promote itself beyond its limitation to a regional extent. The process of exchanging ideas and views on various aspects of physics was invaluable and further strengthened their academic ties and cooperation in the future. We are looking forward to welcoming more talented students pursuing their studies at CityU Physics in the future!
