China Field Epidemiology Training Programme for Veterinarians

Professor Pfeiffer has directed and taught since 2010 together with colleagues from Royal Veterinary College the China Field Epidemiology Training Course for Veterinarians (CFETPV) which is coordinated by the Food and Agriculture Organization, Beijing Office, and China Animal Health and Epidemiology Centre, Qingdao, China. This course fulfils a key role in developing epidemiology capacity in Mainland China’s veterinary service.
It has up until now trained 180 veterinarians from 31 Chinese provinces and five national institutes in a one-month introductory epidemiology course, held every 2 years. From this larger group, a subset of 100 veterinarians (divided into cohorts of about 20) participated in the 2-year FETPV training program. From these CFETPV graduates, 15 are now involved as trainers and been trained in teaching methods.
CFETPV trainees have carried out 167 short training courses, reaching over 10,000 people, at their workplaces. In addition, 7 FETPV-Executive training courses have been held for senior staff from provinces and national animal health agencies to sensitize them for the utility of epidemiology capacity within their organizations. CFETPV trainees have conducted over 80 outbreak investigations, 150 epidemiological studies and many case studies, posters and conference presentations, based on animal health problems relevant to China.
