Congratulations to Professor Paulo Steagall on receiving the 2025 Bourgelat Award from the British Small Animal Veterinary Association (BSAVA). The Bourgelat Award is the BSAVA’s primary recognition for really outstanding international contributions to the fields of small animal practice or science in their widest context”. The BSAVA awards acknowledge the unsung heroes within the veterinary profession who have made significant contributions to veterinary science, research, clinical practice, education, and the welfare of small animals.

In a press release, the BSAVA stated “This year’s Bourgelat Award goes to Professor Paulo Steagall in recognition of his exceptional contributions to pain management awareness and raising the global animal welfare standards. Alongside his collaborative work involving shelters, he is also recognised as a fantastic mentor to his students. He is currently Professor of Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia at the City University of Hong Kong, and a board-certified specialist by the American College of Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia”.

Professor Paulo Steagall’s research is focused on feline welfare and pain management including the Feline Grimace Scale and the study of cost-effective analgesic techniques with immediate application to veterinary practice. He has worked with multiple organisations and is the co-author of some of the most important guidelines on pain management in small animals.
