iAM Smart: The Journey Towards Password-less Login

by Joe Lee

CityUHK has taken a step towards providing a password-less login for all its users as part of its ongoing digital transformation journey.  Since November 2024, CityUHK users who have registered for an iAM Smart account can link it to their CityUHK accounts, allowing them to enjoy this convenient login option with over 3 million citizens registered.  iAM Smart, an online login service provided by the HKSAR Government, enables eligible Hong Kong citizens to access various public services -- such as those from the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) and the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) -- using a single account.

As cyberattacks become increasingly prevalent, Central IT is diligently working to strengthen security measures while promoting the adoption of new technologies.  With the maturity and familiarity of mobile authentication, iAM Smart has been chosen as an alternative way to the existing SSO login method, allowing CityUHK users to log in to the university's systems conveniently and securely.

CityUHK is the first institution in Hong Kong to implement iAM Smart within its authentication framework.  Through the integration of iAM Smart and the CityUHK SSO platform, users can log in to systems such as AIMS, Canvas, or Microsoft 365 using their Face ID or fingerprint on their mobile phones.  Regardless of whether users opt to log in to SSO via their existing username and password or the iAM Smart option, MFA remains in place to maintain a consistent level of security.

As part of CityUHK’s commitment to providing the latest and most secure IT services, we are continuously exploring deeper orchestration of technologies to elevate the user authentication experience even further.
