Magnetic, Wall-climbing Robot for Industry Nondestructive Testing

 

Nondestructive testing (NDT) is a testing and analysis technique used by industry to evaluate the properties of a material, component, structure, or system for characteristic differences or welding defects and discontinuities without causing damage to the original part. Effective NDT is necessary in all industrial fields, especially in the civil, heavy construction, and oil and gas industries.

Our team designed a magnetic, wall-climbing, robotic platform to advance the NDT solution in terms of cost savings, safety, efficiency and accuracy. On the platform, four technical features improve inspection performance and productivity: (1) multi-physics fields of electricity-magnetism-force-ultrasonic, making it suitable for complex working conditions; (2) a high-reduction-ratio hybrid driving system available for ultra-fine outer walls at ultra-low speed; (3) a multipole magnetized adsorption structure and high-density magnetic energy capable for multitasking modules; and (4) an integrated circuit system and stable wireless control method that can be developed for intelligent, digitized NDT work.
