CityUHK HK Tech 300 Innovation Ecosystem – A 2024 Review

Nurturing Talent, Creating Enterprises and Advancing Innovation

Launched by City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) in 2021 with an investment of HK$600 million, HK Tech 300 aims to nurture I&T talent by offering seed funding, angel investment, co-working space, business networks and investment matching. To date, the initiative has provided professional training to over 1,800 individuals and supported more than 900 start-ups. Over 740 teams have received HK$100,000 each in seed funding, and more than 190 start-ups have secured angel funding of up to HK$1 million each. These ventures span sectors such as biomedical and health technology, advanced manufacturing, environmental, social and governance (ESG), fintech, information technology (IT) and artificial intelligence (AI).

As a global hub for education and research, CityUHK is committed to transforming its portfolio of over 1,800 patented technologies into commercial and industrial applications. HK Tech 300 plays a crucial role in this process, contributing to the socio-economic development of Hong Kong, the Mainland and beyond.

Injecting Momentum into Innovation and Technology Development

Establishment of the CityUHK Academy of Innovation

In 2024, CityUHK further reinforced its commitment to nurturing talent in innovation and entrepreneurship with the establishment of the Academy of Innovation. The Academy’s curriculum, designed for undergraduate, master's and doctoral students, is closely aligned with the national strategy of fostering high-tech development. Its inaugural MSc in Venture Creation programme welcomed its first cohort in September 2024.

Five Projects Secure RAISe+ Funding

The importance of CityUHK’s research excellence was reaffirmed when it was among the top two recipients among eight local universities in the Hong Kong government’s Research, Academic and Industry Sectors One-plus Scheme (RAISe+) in May 2024. CityUHK secured grants for five projects in biomedical sciences, materials science, big data, energy and the environment. The scheme awarded a total of over HK$1 billion in research funding in 2024.

HK Tech 300 National Start-up Competition 2nd Award Ceremony and 3rd Competition Launch Ceremony

HK Tech 300 continues to scale its influence in the I&T ecosystem across China. The HK Tech 300 National Start-up Competition has been a landmark event since 2022.
