Mr Zhang Bo, Chairman and CEO of China Hongqiao Group Limited (“Hongqiao”), is recognised for his business acumen and commitment to social responsibility. Founded in Shandong Province, Hongqiao has been listed on the Main Board of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange since 2011. Over the past 30 years, Hongqiao has grown into a world-leading aluminium product manufacturer. The company leverages innovative technologies to enhance production efficiency, promote sustainable practices and actively contribute to community welfare. Hongqiao’s recent support for City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) underscores its dedication to education and community development.
With a strong belief that innovation and education are essential for societal progress, Mr Zhang Bo emphasises that successful enterprises should prioritise growth and contribute to the well-being of the communities. “Supporting education and technological innovation can drive industrial development, improve the living quality of residents, and enhance the innovative capacity of society,” Mr Zhang Bo explains. Hongqiao’s commitment to social welfare and progress drives its support for educational initiatives, particularly in fields poised for future advancements.
In a significant move, Hongqiao has pledged HK$70 million to CityUHK, marking its first funding support for a Hong Kong educational institution. It will support research initiatives and establish the Hongqiao Endowed Fund for Community Care under the CityUHK Endowment Campaign. The endowed fund will be dedicated to fostering meaningful community engagement projects.
Hongqiao’s decision to support CityUHK stems from the recognition of the University’s commitment to excellence in education and research. “CityUHK’s strengths in high-impact research align perfectly with our vision for innovation,” Mr Zhang Bo explains. This collaboration will enhance synergy between academia and industry, nurturing scientific talent.
Mr Zhang Bo believes that supporting interdisciplinary research in relevant fields of its business areas will foster impactful discoveries and innovative outcomes that will transform the industry. “The integration of advanced technology into traditional production models has revolutionised our industry,” he notes.
Hongqiao emphasises sustainable growth, resonating with the CityUHK Endowment Campaign. The newly established Hongqiao Endowed Fund for Community Care is designed to serve as a perpetual fund, providing long-term support for community engagement initiatives. Through knowledge transfer, these projects will focus on addressing critical social issues, enhancing educational opportunities and promoting sustainable development.
“By supporting CityUHK in these projects, we aim to reach out to the local communities through CityUHK to gain a deeper understanding of community needs and inspire positive change,” says Mr Zhang Bo. He envisions a future where community initiatives enhance the quality of life for citizens while enriching CityUHK students’ educational experiences. He hopes to foster empathy and cultivate a stronger sense of social responsibility among students, encouraging them to give back to society, and thus lead the world towards a brighter future.
