Passing on the Caring and Giving Spirit

Dr Andrew Fan Ka Fai, one of CityUHK’s first Distinguished Alumnus receivers, is also an Honorary Fellow, a former Council Member, and a current Court Member. He has consistently demonstrated unwavering support for the University. He embodies the Chinese saying, “When one drinks water, one must not forget its source”, seeing CityUHK as his second home. Since his graduation, he has actively engaged with the University’s developments, contributing ideas, financial support, and efforts to foster its growth. Additionally, he participates actively in alumni and student activities organised by the University, inspiring others with his caring spirit and profound life philosophies.

Among his many philanthropic endeavours, Dr Fan places particular emphasis on nurturing students, often greeting CityUHK’s students and alumni with his favourite phrase, “CityUers are Winners!” In 2007, he established the “FANs Awards Scheme” to cultivate future leaders at CityUHK. Over the past eighteen years, a total of 358 awards have been presented to 329 students, providing encouragement and resources for their success. Despite his busy schedule, Dr Fan dedicates valuable time each year to sharing his insights with both current and past award recipients.

In 2024, CityUHK launched its first-ever University-wide Endowment Campaign. Dr Fan has shown great support for the Campaign, believing that today’s contributions will create a lasting impact by nurturing future leaders who will positively influence the world. Therefore, he furthered his commitment to CityUHK by founding the “Mr Anthony Fan Endowed Fund”, named in honour of his father. This fund is used to enhance the FANs Awards Scheme, supporting more students and empowering future generations to succeed.

Notably, Dr Fan’s dedication has inspired others to engage in philanthropy. Mr David Wang, a beneficiary of the FANs Awards Scheme, was deeply moved by Dr Fan’s kindness and commitment to nurturing talent. In response, David has pledged a monthly donation with the goal of establishing his own endowed fund, seeking to pass on the caring spirit instilled in him by Dr Fan.
