Information
Day 2007
This year the annual Information Day will take place on 13 October. Under
the theme "From Student to Professional", CityU's commitment
to helping young people transform into well-educated professionals will
be highlighted. Information Day will consist of an array of briefing sessions
on different progarmmes, exhibitions, talks and guided tours, plus a series
of seminars for parents co-hosted with Metro Radio. CityU professors and
celebrity guest speakers will share their experience and expertise with
both young people and parents and provide guidance on personal growth,
academic development and career prospects.

Parents'
Day at CityU
About 400 parents, career masters and members of parents and teachers
associations from local secondary schools participated in the "Parents'
Day at CityU" organized by the Community Relations Committee of the
University Council on 27 September. The talks delivered by Professor
Richard Ho Yan-ki, Acting President; Dr Chan Yan-chong,
Associate Professor of the Management Sciences Department and Dr
Wong Sing-wing, Associate Professor of the Applied Social Studies
Department, were well received by the participants.

Eminent
speakers lecture series
The School of Law is organizing a public lecture on "Sustainability
Considerations for Infrastructure Development" featuring Dr
Raymond Ho Chung-tai, a member of the Hong Kong Legislative Council
representing the Engineering Functional Constituency and a Hong Kong Deputy
to the Tenth National People's Congress of the PRC. Dr Ho was awarded
Honorary Doctor of Business Administration by CityU. The lecture will
be held at 4:30pm on Wednesday, 3 October 2007 in Lecture Theatre 3, 4/F,
Academic Building.

International
conference on terrorism, human security and development
The School of Law, in collaboration with the United Nations University,
Tokyo, Japan, will host a two-day international conference on 16 October
and 17 October at the Multi-media Conference Room. This conference is
the first of its kind in Hong Kong and will bring together more than 25
experts from around the world in law and policy issues relating to terrorism,
public law, comparative and international law, human rights, and development.
They will discuss the topic from the human perspective in order to enhance
the understanding of various related issues and their overall implications
for promoting and protecting human rights.

International
Feng Shui conference
The 3rd International Conference on Scientific Feng Shui & Built Environment
2007 ¡X Sustainability & Operability, co-hosted by the Department of
Building & Construction, Asian Institute of Intelligent Buildings
and Building Services Operation and Maintenance Executives Society, will
be held at Wei Hing Theatre on 26 October and 27 October 2007. More than
10 distinguished environmental scientists, architects and Feng Shui researchers
from Australia, Germany, Italy, Japan, Serbia, US, Brazil, UK, Malaysia,
mainland China and Hong Kong will be assembled to share their case studies
and research on scientific Feng Shui and the built environment. A study
tour will be included in the 2-day conference to present the cases to
the participants.

Japan Week
2007
The Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics (CTL) will hold
Japan Week 2007 from 9 October to 12 October with the aim of enhancing
students' understanding of Japanese language and culture. Programmes include
four seminars by well-known scholars from Japan on linguistics, culture
and politics in Japan, performances in Japanese tea ceremony, traditional
clothing, flower arrangement and traditional drums and swords. Japan Week
will be opened on 9 October by Mr Sato Shigekatsu, Consul-General
of Japan in Hong Kong; Professor Richard Ho Yan-ki, Acting
President; Professor Martin John Painter, Acting Dean
of Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences; Professor Jonathan
Webster, Head of Department of CTL; and Mr Chan Che-shing,
Departmental Advisory Committee Member of CTL.

Annual Athletic
Meet (2007-2008)
The 14th CityU Annual Athletic Meet will be held on Sunday, 7 October
between 9am and 5pm at the Joint Sports Centre on Renfrew Road. Organized
by the Physical Education Section of Student Development Services and
sponsored by the Cultural and Sports Committee, this annual sports event
welcomes all students, full-time staff and their dependant children (for
children's events only) to participate.

Dress Special
Day
Staff and students raised $16,427.20 for this year's Dress Special Day,
which took place on 25 September. All donations will go to support the
Family and Child Welfare Services under the Community Chest Umbrella.

Outstanding
Paper Award
Professor (Chair) Douglas Vogel and Dr Ron Kwok
Chi-wai, Associate Professor, of the Department of Information
Systems, won the Outstanding Paper Award at the 19th World Conference
on Education Multimedia, Hypermedia and Telecommunications, organized
by the Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education. The
paper titled "Do Mobile Device Applications Lead to Learning?"
was co-authored by Dr David Kennedy of the University
of Hong Kong.
