Campus
development
The University will hold a University Development Forum on 24 November
to discuss CityU's campus development. Professor H K Chang,
University President; Professor David Tong, Deputy President;
and Prodessor Y S Wong, Vice-President (Administration),
will chair the session, which will take place in the Wei Hing Theatre,
Amenities Building, from noon to 1:30pm.
The management of CityU continues
to review proposals to improve teaching, research and other facilities
that will help ease overcrowding and prepare for the four-year curriculum.
Discussions on new construction projects are underway and the Council's
Executive Committee has agreeed to recommend to the full Council plans
to proceed with the construction of two buildings, in addition to the
Creative Media Centre. The Forum will present these plans, which include
proposed site locations for the new Community College Building and the
Academic-administrative Building for the four-year curriculum, and will
be an opportunity to seek feedback from staff and students. All staff
and students are welcome to attend.

Chinese
version of new mission statement
The Chinese
version of the University Mission Statement, which was approved by the
Council in June this year following University-wide consultations in May,

Task
Force report on Shenzhen Outpost
The
Management Board (MB) has approved the recommendations of the Shenzhen
Outpost Task Force, under the Mainland Policy Steering Committee, to change
the name of the legal entity that holds the Shenzhen Outpost from 城大
研 發 中 心 ( 深 圳 ) 有 限 公 司 to 城 大 研 究 院 ( 深 圳 ) 有 限 公
司 . The MB also has approved that Professor Y S Wong,
Vice-President (Administration), Professor Roderick Wong,
Dean of Research and Graduate Studies,
Mr James Ng, Executive Director of CityU
Extension, and Mr H Y Wong, Director of Technology
Transfer Office, be named directors of the entity; and that Professor
Roderick Wong be named the Chairman of the Board.

Precautionary
measures against avian flu
The University is taking a number of steps to raise awareness of the threat
posed by avian flu. Professor H K Chang, University President,
has appointed Professor Y S Wong, Vice-President (Administration),
to set up the Ad-hoc Group on Prevention of Avian Flu. The Group will
identify the best precautionary measures, draw up emergency plans in case
of any outbreak and keep the campus community informed. The website "Campus
prevention of avian flu" (www.cityu.edu.hk/avianflu)
provides useful information and in case of an outbreak will serve as the
main communication channel for the University community.

Thanksgiving
Dinner
The Community Relations Committee (CRC) of the Council will host a "Thanksgiving
Dinner" on 22 November to thank generous donors for their support
and valuable contributions over the years to help improve the University.
The "BRIDGE to Success" educational advancement project, which
aims at inviting prominent people in society to take part in the University's
education process to help students on the road to success, will also be
launched at the dinner. The event will be attended by Council Chairman
Sir Gordon Wu; Dr Dennis Sun, CRC Chairman;
other members of the Council; Professor H K Chang, University
President; other senior staff members, benefactors and friends of the
University.

Senior
staff appointment
Dr Charles Chen, Acting Head of the Department
of Accountancy, has been appointed as Head of the Department for a
term of office from 9 November 2005 to 31 July 2008.

External
appointments
Professor Hong Yan,
Professor (Chair) of Computer Engineering in the Department
of Electronic Engineering (EE), has been elected Fellow of the Institute
of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) for contributions to image
recognition techniques and applications. EE now boasts seven IEEE Fellows,
a record for a single academic department in Hong Kong.
Professor Leung Kwok,
Head of the Department
of Management, has been appointed a member of Hong Kong's Panel of
Arbitrators for the Labour Tribunal, with effect from 1 October 2005,
for three years. Professor Leung is also serving as Chair of the Research
Methods Division in the Academy of Management, US, which started in August
2005 and will last for one year. In addition, Professor Leung was recently
selected as Fellow of the American Psychological Society and a Member
of the Society of Organizational Behaviour in the US.

Kudos
Dr Jia Weijia,
Associate Professor, Department
of Computer Science, and his PhD student Tu Wanqing,
in collaboration with Professor J Wu of Florida Atlantic
University, received the Best Paper award at the 2005 International Conference
on Computer Networks and Mobile Computing.
Mr Mohan Narasipuram,
Associate Professor in the Department
of Information Systems, has been elected Fellow of the Hong Kong Computer
Society.

The CityU Putonghua Debating Team was the 2nd runner-up
in the 2005 Hong Kong Joint Tertiary Institutions Putonghua Debating Competition
organized by RTHK.

Annual
Report wins two awards
CityU's 2003–04 Annual
Report received the Silver award in the 2005 International ARC Awards
Competition in the category of "Non-profit Organization 2004 Annual
Report: University". In addition, it won in the "Citation for
Achievement in Design" under the "Non-profit Making and Charitable
Organizations" category in the Hong Kong Management Association's
2005 Best Annual Reports Awards.
