Presidential
delegation to the mainland
Professor H K Chang, led a CityU
delegation to Beijing, 5-8 September, and visited the Renmin University
of China, the Beijing Film Academy and the Communication University of
China. Professor Chang and Professor Ji Baocheng, President
of the Renmin University of China, signed a 'memorandum of understanding'
for further collaboration in economics, law, and social sciences. Under
the agreement, both universities will arrange staff exchanges, organize
international conferences, produce joint publications, and apply for national
or regional support for research projects.
In another delegation, Professor
Chang joined by eight CityU staff, visited southwest China, 12-18 September,
to explore further collaboration opportunities. The delegation comprising:

and Cooperation Office, visited the Guangxi University, the Kunming University
of Science and Technology, Yunnan University, Sichuan University, Southwest
Jiao Tong University, the University of Electronic Science and Technology
of China, and the Sichuan Provincial Education Bureau.

Promoting
applied research on the mainland
CityU will showcase its research strength at the Shenzhen
High-tech Fair 2004, 12-17 October, with a display of 30 research projects
including those conducted in the Shenzhen and Zhuhai Applied R&D Centres.
The projects cover a range of disciplines from biotechnology, industrial
technologies, information technology, and power electronics, to wireless
communications. The Technology Transfer Office and the Shenzhen Institute
helped arrange participation in the exhibition.

Lecture
theatres naming ceremony
To recognize the continuous support of a group of young
industrialists, the University will name four Lecture Theatres after these
distinguished leaders. A Naming Ceremony cum "A Dialogue with Successful
Leaders", will take place on 6 October. Industrial leaders including
Dr K B Chan, Chairman and Managing Director of Surface
Mount Technology (Holdings) Ltd; Dr Lily Chiang, The
Lily Chiang Charitable Foundation Ltd; Mr Measure Hung,
Chairman and Managing Director of Mobicon Group Ltd; Mr Y K So,
Chairman of AV Concept Holdings Ltd; Mr Johnny Yeung,
Chairman of Fujikon Industrial Holdings Ltd; and Dr Dennis Sun
Tai Lun; will share their mottos for success with CityU staff
and students.

External
funding for research
Dr Henry Chung, Associate Professor of
the Department of Electronic Engineering, has received a grant of HK$0.9
million from the Innovation and Technology Fund, to develop an energy-efficient
system for the electronic industry.
Dr Dennis Wong, Associate
Professor of the Department of Applied Social Studies, has received awards
from the Competitive Earmarked Research Grant and the Quality Education
Fund, totaling HK$0.98 million, to develop a "Whole-school Approach
in Tackling School Bullying" project.

Online
Putonghua learning software
With a grant of HK$100,000 from CityU's Teaching Development
Fund, Ms Sze Mei, Lecturer in the Department of Chinese,
Translation and Linguistics, develops an online Putonghua learning software,
the first of its kind among Chinese-speaking communities to use visual
images to facilitate learning. Ms Sze aims to upload the software onto
the intranet for staff and students to learn Putonghua on the web. Demonstrations
will take place on 24 September to solicit feedback.

New
book released
A new book, Building Dilapidation and Rejuvenation in
Hong Kong, edited by Professor Andrew Leung, Head, Department
of Building and Construction, and jointly published by the CityU Press
and the Building Surveying Division of the Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors,
will be released at a book launching ceremony on 23 September.

20th
Anniversary updates
The "Proud of 20" Team had a 50-km overnight
trial walk from Pak Tam Au to Tsuen Kam Au, 18-19 September, to benchmark
the athletes' speed and as a rehearsal for the walkers and supporting
teams. Around 100 students, alumni and staff have joined, and 20 finalists
will be selected in October to form the core team for the walk in November.
Professor Y S Wong, Vice-President (Administration),
has agreed to be the Honorary Coach of the "Proud of 20" Team.
Conference ¡X "The Conception
and Organization of Knowledge in Pre-Modern Asian and European Courts",
organized by the Centre for Cross-Cultural Studies, 8-10 October, in
the Multi-media Conference Room.
Exhibition ¡X The Run Run Shaw
Library will stage a University Memorabilia Exhibition, October to December.
The exhibition features ex-staff and current staff members' unique collections
of historical and newsworthy photos, documents related to the University's
development.
