City University Distinguished Lectures

Dr Lee Kai-fu will give a talk as part of the City University Distinguished Lecture Series on 3 December. The talk is titled “Betting on China’s Innovations—A perspective from Innovation Works”. Dr Lee founded Innovation Works in September 2009. Innovation Works is a business creation platform geared to create the next wave of Chinese high-tech companies and to mentor the next-generation of Chinese entrepreneurs.

Professor Rogers Smith, Christopher H. Browne Distinguished Professor of Political Science and Associate Dean for the Social Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania, and Chair of the Penn Program on Democracy, Citizenship, and Constitutionalism, will give a talk titled “Beyond Sovereignty and Uniformity: Pursuing Moderation and Pluralism in the 21st Century” on 14 December 2015. Professor Smith was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2004 and of the American Academy of Political and Social Science in 2011.

Elected Fellow

Chair Professor Ron Chen Guanrong of the Department of Electronic Engineering has been elected Fellow of The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) for the advancement of science in developing countries. The election is recognition of Professor Chen’s outstanding contribution to science and its promotion in the developing world. TWAS was founded in 1983 by a distinguished group of scientists from the developing world, and has some 1,150 elected Fellows from more than 90 countries, 15 of whom are Nobel laureates.

Kudos

Department of Electronic Engineering (EE):
PhD students Fan Wing-to and Tung Chung-pui have been awarded the HKIE Outstanding Paper Award for Young Engineers/Researchers 2015 for their paper “An Integration of Series-pass Device into Switched-mode Power Converters for Input Harmonics Filtering”. Their supervisor was Professor Henry Chung Shu-hung. Organised annually by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE), the competition encourages young engineers and researchers to publish their work and develop in their professional fields.

In addition, Professor Chung has been elected as Fellow of IEEE for his outstanding contributions to power electronic converters for lighting. With this achievement, EE now boasts 15 IEEE Fellows. He also received the 2015 Second Prize Paper Award presented by The Renewable and Sustainable Energy Conversion Systems of the IEEE Industry Applications Society. The winning paper, co-authored with his research staff, Mr Zhou Rui, Research Assistant, and PhD graduate, Dr Zhang Ruihong, is titled “Inductive Power Transfer System for Driving Multiple LED Lighting Panels”. It was presented at the 2014 Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition, which is a premier global conference covering topics in energy conversion from electric machines, power electronics, drives, devices and applications existing and emergent.

In addition, PhD student Lin Wei, supervised by Dr Steve Wong Hang, Assistant Professor, has recently received the Young Scientist Award at 2015 IEEE TENCON Conference for the paper "Emerging Reconfigurable Antenna Elements for Broadband Wireless Communication Systems". Held annually since 1980, TENCON provides an important forum for researchers, engineers, professors and graduate students to network and to discuss new ideas/ development in emerging areas of electrical and engineering, computers science and related fields.

Mr Mui Ka-tsun, an EE graduate in 2015, won the Silver Award of HKEIA Innovation & Technology Project Competition Award 2015. His winning final-year project, supervised by Dr Andy Chan Hau-ping, Associate Professor, is titled “Scalable Artistic LED Bar for Light Painting”. Jointly organised by The Hong Kong Electronic Industries Association (HKEIA) and Hong Kong Electronic Industries Association Education Foundation (HKEIAEF), the award is designed to recognise and reward students with outstanding final-year projects that demonstrate excellence in technology and innovation.

PhD student Zhang Jieqiong, supervised by Professor Wong Hei, won the Young Scientist Award at 2015 IEEE TENCON for the paper "XPS Study on the Effect of Thermal Annealing on the CeO2/La2O3 Stacked Gate Dielectrics". The paper was co-authored with two of Professor Wong’s research collaborators, Professor Iwai Hiroshi and Professor Kakushima Kuniyuki of the Tokyo Institute of Technology.

Department of Computer Science:
Ji Houling, a PhD student, together with his supervisors Dr Victor Lee Chung-sing, Assistant Professor, and Dr Chow Chi-yin, Assistant Professor, received the Best Paper Award for a co-authored paper titled “Coding-based Cooperative Caching in Data Broadcast Environments” at the 15th International Conference on Algorithms and Architectures for Parallel Processing in Zhangjiajie, Hunan Province, from 18 to 20 November 2015.

Dr Henry Xu, Assistant Professor, received the Best Paper Award for his paper titled “Minimizing Transient Congestion during Network Update in Data Centers” in the 23rd IEEE International Conference on Network Protocols (ICNP) held in San Francisco from 10 to 13 November 2015. ICNP is a premier conference on network protocols, covering all aspects of network protocol research, including design, analysis, specification, verification, implementation, and performance.

Department of Accountancy (AC) and Department of Marketing (MKT):
Four CityU students won the Champion and Best Team Spirit Award and the Top Participating Institute (Degree) in the ACCA Hong Kong Business Competition 2015 for their business model title “ EASY – legal, tax and professional advisory services at affordable price for low income group” on 21 November 2015. The winning students were Kan Long-yin, Tam Wing-yee and Yeung Sz-wing, on the BBA in Accountancy programme in AC; and Lam Kiu-chun studying for the BBA in China Business in MKT.
