New appointments
Mr Sunny Lee Wai-kwong has been appointed as Vice-President (Administration), which is a re-titling of the position of Chief Administration Officer. Mr Lee, who assumed duty on 2 July 2013, holds a bachelor's and a master's degrees in Operations Research & Industrial Engineering both from Cornell University of the US and has extensive professional and management experience in Hong Kong and the US. Prior to joining the University, he was Executive Director, Information Technology at the Hong Kong Jockey Club, and he has been active in community work, serving on a number of government and advisory committees for academic, professional and public bodies.

Professor Matthew Lee Kwok-on has been appointed as acting Chief-of-Staff with effect from 1 July 2013 upon the retirement of Professor Julia Tao Lai Po-wah. Professor Lee is currently Chair Professor of Information Systems and E-Commerce and the Director of the Communications and Public Relations Office.

Mrs Fiona Williams took over as the Head of English Language Centre (ELC) with effect from 17 June 2013. Mrs Williams, who joined the ELC in 2002, had been an Associate Head since 2005, and the Acting Head in the Centre. She has extensive experience in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) and is a specialist in the area of independent learning.

 

Distinguished Lecture
Mr Hau Pei-tsun, Former Premier of Executive Yuan, Taiwan, will deliver a City University Distinguished Lecture titled "Peaceful Uni­fication or Uni­fication by Force? The Characteristics of Chinese-style Democracy". The lecture will take place on 19 July. Departmental name change
The Senate has approved the retitling of the Department of Public and Social Administration to the Department of Public Policy for implementation from 1 July 2013.

 

Hong Kong Book Fair 2013
CityU Press will launch 11 new titles at the Hong Kong Book Fair from 17 to 24 July at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Interactive e-books developed by CityU students and interactive touch screen displays will be set up to introduce the University's unique Discovery-enriched Curriculum, encouraging visitors to experience the innovative, interdisciplinary research projects conducted by CityU staff and students for the benefit of society. The booth will be located at No. 1D-A32 of Hall One.

In addition, the "Pure Land: Inside the Mogao Grottoes at Dunhuang", an animated 3D exhibition will be on display at the Art Gallery. This is presented in partnership with CityU's Applied Laboratory for Interactive Visualization and Embodiment (ALiVE), the Dunhuang Academy China and the Friends of Dunhuang (HK).

 

The SCM Annual 2013
Over 70 graduating students from the School of Creative Media (SCM) will showcase their creativity at the SCM Annual 2013 held from 6 to 21 July at the Run Run Shaw Creative Media Centre. On display are interactive installations, photography, animations and films created under the theme "Resonance".

 

Kudos
Ralph Tigoumo, a Year 2 student in the Department of Economics and Finance, and his team won third prize in the 2013 HKUST One Million Dollar Entrepreneurship Competition.
