New appointment
Professor Man Kim-fung has been appointed as Head of Department of Electronic Engineering from 1 August 2010 to 31 July 2013. Professor Man joined the University in 1988 and is currently Chair Professor of the Department.

 

William Benter Prize in Applied Mathematics
The Liu Bie Ju Centre for Mathematical Sciences has created a prestigious William Benter Prize in Applied Mathematics for outstanding contributions to mathematical sciences that have a direct and fundamental impact on scientific, business, finance and engineering applications. The first award will be presented at the International Conference in Applied Mathematics to be held on 7-11 June.

 

Emerging Technologies Forum
An Emerging Technologies Forum on Advances in Telemedicine, organised by CityU Business and Industrial Club and the Knowledge Transfer Office, will be held on 3 June. Speakers at the forum include Dr Tsang Kim-fung, Associate Professor from the Department of Electronic Engineering of CityU, Mr Raymond Choi, President of Celki Medical Company, and Dr Kris V Srikrishnan, Distinguished Engineer, Director of Global Partnerships, IBM Research & University Programmes.

 

Modern Chinese grammar
The Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics, the Syntax and Semantics section of the Institute of Linguistics of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and Zhong Guo Yu Wen are organising the 16th Symposium on Modern Chinese Grammar on 8-10 June. It is the oldest and the most influential academic serial conference on syntax and semantics in Chinese linguistics. Scholars from the US, France, Japan, Korea, Singapore, mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan will participate in the symposium, which will make a big impact on studies in Chinese syntax and semantics worldwide.

 

Kudos
Researchers from the Department of Biology and Chemistry, including Associate Professor Dr Cheng Shuk Han, Research Fellow Dr Chen Xueping and Research Assistant Miss Li Li, won the Gold Prize and a FKI (Federation of Korean Industries) Special Prize at the Korean International Women's Invention Exposition (KIWIE) 2010 for their research project "Transgenic fish for biomonitoring of estrogen-like substances". KIWIE 2010 was hosted by the Korean Intellectual Property Office and organised by the Korea Women Inventors Association to recognise achievements of domestic and overseas woman inventors.
