New
school appointment
The establishment of the School of Energy and Environment was
recently endorsed by the Senate for the approval of the Council in June
2009. Chair Professor Johnny Chan Chung-leung in the
Department of Physics and Materials Science has been appointed Director
of the Planning Office of the School of Energy and Environment, with immediate
effect until the formal establishment of the School. Professor Chan will
lead and give support to the planning and development of the new School,
which aspires to provide leading-edge research and professional education
in the areas of energy and environment to meet the needs of Greater China
and the Asia Pacific region.

Teaching
excellence
The 2008-2009 Teaching Excellence Awards have been won by Ms
Penny Akers, an English Language Centre English Enhancement Course
Tutor, Dr Annis Fung Lai-chu, Assistant Professor, Department
of Applied Social Studies, and Dr Leung Mei-yung, Assistant
Professor, Department of Building and Construction. The Awards will be
formally presented to the candidates at the Congregation in November and
their names will be added to the permanently displayed register to recognise
their teaching excellence.

Literary
Awards
The Fourth City Literary Festival organised by CityU will be held from
24 to 27 April in Hong Kong and Macau. Prominent writers including Mr
Chang Ta-chuan, Prof Cheng Chou-yu, Ms
Zhang Yihe and Ms Mao Jian will speak at seminars
and workshops on prose, short stories, poetry and criticism of literature
and art scheduled for both cities to promote creative writing and help
nurture young writers.

Grand
slams
The CityU sports team has once again outperformed other institutions and
received the overall championship titles in both men and women divisions
from the University Sports Federation of Hong Kong, China. The 2008-09
award ceremony was held on 19 April. This is the first time a tertiary
institution has received both the overall menˇ¦s and womenˇ¦s titles in
two consecutive years. This is also the fourth time CityU has won both
overall titles in the same year.

Straw
Competition
More than 180 teams comprising secondary students from Hong Kong and Macau
will compete for prizes in the 12th Hong Kong-Macau Inter-School Straw
Competition to be held at CityU on 26 April. Participants will use straws
to construct a launcher to propel a ball to pass through a target. The
competition is organised by the Studentsˇ¦ Union Physics and Materials
Science Society with support from the Department of Physics and Materials
Science.
