Rare honour
Professor Zhang Longxi, Chair Professor of Comparative Literature and Translation, has joined the likes of French Enlightenment philosopher and writer Voltaire in becoming a foreign member of the esteemed Royal Swedish Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities. The Academy, established more than two and a half centuries ago, bestowed the honour upon Professor Zhang in recognition of his exceptional literary contribution to East-West cultural understanding and discourse.

Review Panel
Five distinguished experts are visiting the College of Humanities and Social Sciences from 2-4 March to provide expert advice on its strategic direction. The feedback is aimed at enhancing the quality of the college’s academic programmes and focusing its research agenda. During the three-day visit, the experts were to review the strengths of the college and potential areas for improvement.

Nanostructures
Professor Jacques Livage of the Collège de France will deliver a lecture as part of the France-Hong Kong Distinguished Lecture Series, presenting an overview of the most recent developments in the field of Bio-inspired Nanostructured Materials. The lecture will take place on 11 March, 4:30pm, at the Multi-media Conference Room.

Creative technology
A team of four Department of Electronic Engineering students won the Excellence Award in the Samsung Joint Universities Creative Technology Talents Awards, a technology gadgets competition. The team comprising Andy Wong Yee-tak, Andy Wang Xian, Arthur Liu Zhao and Joanne Law Kit-wan won the award for their project, Elder Walkcare.

Law practice
The School of Law team finished sixth out of 20 teams worldwide in the 2008 Foreign Direct Investment International Moot (FDI) Competition. The four-student team included Vicky Chung
Wing-kay, Winki Lam Wing-kei, Jason Szeto Chung-hin and Candy Tang So-man, while Candy Tang finished seventh in the Best Oralist category and was granted an Honorary Mention. The FDI Competition is an annual competition for students and is organised by centres and universities of legal education of Austria, USA, UK and Germany.

Sports achievements
The CityU Fencing, Taekwondo and Woodball teams were second overall in the inter-collegiate competition organised by the University Sports Federation of Hong Kong, China.
