Honorary doctorates
CityU will confer honorary doctoral degrees on The Hon Mr Justice Patrick Chan, Dr Chow Yei-ching, GBS and Mr Sze Chi-ching, JP in recognition of their significant contribution to education and the well-being of society. The award ceremony will be held in November 2008. Mr Justice Chan, Permanent Judge of the Court of Final Appeal, will receive an Honorary Doctor of Laws. Dr Chow, Chairman and Managing Director of the Chevalier Group of Companies, and Mr Sze, Chairman of Hang Tung Resources Holding Limited, will receive an Honorary Doctor of Social Science.


Academic exchange fund
Second round applications are invited for the Academic Exchange Fund, which provides full or partial subsidies for both incoming and outgoing exchange visits, programmes or activities lasting a maximum of seven days. Applications for this round must be related to activities scheduled to take place in the period from January to June 2009. Priority will be given to exchange activities for initial contacts or strengthening collaboration with institutions which have established academic exchange agreements with the University at institutional level and/or those which have been recommended for development as long-term partner institutions. Eminent lecture series
The School of Law (SLW) is holding a public lecture on "East Asian Economic Community: Prospects and Challenges", with special guest speaker,
Professor M Supperamaniam, Adjunct Professor, International Islamic University of Malaysia, and former ambassador and permanent representative of Malaysia to the World Trade Organisation in Geneva, Switzerland. The lecture will take place on 23 September with a welcoming address by Professor Wang Guiguo, Dean of SLW, and comments by Professor Noh-young Park, Vice-President for Academic Affairs and Professor of International Law of Korea University. The lecture will be held in the Multimedia Conference Room.


Cultural Salon
The Cultural and Sports Committee will organise the City Cultural Salon on 22 September. Dr Louis Ng Chi-wa, Assistant Director (Heritage & Museums), will share his views on Hong Kong museums. His speech is entitled "Museums in Hong Kong: traditional, modern and post-modern". Attendance is by invitation.


Best paper award
Two MPhil students in the Department of Electronic Engineering have won the Bronze Prize and Merit Prize of the Outstanding Paper Award in the Broadband World Forum Asia 2008. Tung Hoi-yan's winning paper was titled "A Power Saving Energy Management System" and her supervisor was Dr Tsang Kim-fung. Lam Ka-lun's merit prize was the result of his paper titled "An Economic and Efficient Telemedicine System", and his supervisor was Dr Ko King-tim. The Broadband World Forum was organised by the International Engineering Consortium.


Scholarships
Colin Chen Chen, a Department of Accountancy student, received second prize in the Hong Kong SAR section of the first Ernst & Young Scholarships for Excellence in Accounting Studies competition. The scholarship recognises academic excellence among top undergraduate university students at more than 10 leading universities in mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Chung Wai-kin, a final year student from the Division of Building Science and Technology (BST), won the Travel Scholarship Award in the Hong Kong Institute of Architects (HKIA) Sustainable Architecture Design Student Project Award 2008. The scholarship allows him to participate in the HKIA Green Tour 2008 Australia and the Sustainable Building 2008 World Conference to be held in Melbourne from 13 to 25 September. In addition, Ko Pui-sze, a graduate of BST and the Department of Building and Construction, won an Honourable Mention in the same competition.

 

Young leaders
Year 2 students from the Faculty of Business have dominated the Young Leadership Development Programme organised by the AIA Foundation this year, grabbing two of the four major awards. Yeung Sheung-yum took home the Most Outstanding Young Leader Award. Together with Ho Hang-yu, Kam Wan-ha and Sung Suet-fung, the quartet received the Best Report Writing Award. In addition, Chan Ting-fai, Year 3 student of the Faculty of Science and Engineering, and Li Lai-ching, Year 3 student of the Faculty of Business, received the AIA Foundation Scholarship in recognition of their academic excellence.

 

Swim meet
The 18th CityU Annual Aquatic Meet will be held on 27 September, from noon until 6pm. The event is organised by the Students' Union, Physical Education Section of the Student Development Services. All students, alumni, full-time staff and their immediate family members are welcome to participate in the various competition categories.
