Distinguished Lecture Series on Global Sustainability
Mr Ban Ki-moon, Chair/President of the Global Green Growth Institute and Former Secretary-General of the United Nations, will feature at the CityUHK Distinguished Lecture cum School of Energy and Environment: 15th Anniversary Symposium on Global Sustainability and Energy Innovation. HKICE Distinguished Lecture
Professor Park Nam-gyu, Distinguished Professor at Sungkyunkwan University, South Korea, will deliver a lecture titled “Academic Trajectory and Progresses of Perovskite Solar Cells” on 5 December under the auspices of the Hong Kong Institute for Clean Energy (HKICE). Professor Park will share groundbreaking advancements in perovskite photovoltaics, highlighting innovations in efficiency, stability, and commercialisation potential. Professor Zhang Hua, Herman Hu Chair Professor of Nanomaterials, and Professor Wang Cong, Associate Head and Professor in the Department of Computer Science, have received the BOCHK Science and Technology Innovation Prize for their pioneering research. Professor Zhang was recognised for his phase engineering of nanomaterials strategy, advancing clean energy and catalysis technologies. Professor Wang was honoured for his outstanding contributions in developing innovative data and AI security technologies, which help to enhance FinTech applications.
Professor Alex Yu Xianghao from the Department of Electrical Engineering (EE) was awarded the 2024 IEEE Communication Society (ComSoc) Asia-Pacific Outstanding Young Researcher Award for his contributions to MIMO communications with large-scale arrays and surfaces. This prestigious award recognises exceptional researchers under 35 for their creativity, research impact, and contributions to ComSoc activities. It is the highest honour for young researchers in information and communication in the Asia-Pacific region.
A team of students from the Department of Chemistry (CHEM) won the Best Education Award and Gold Medal at the 2024 International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) Grand Jamboree. Their award-winning project is an aptamer-based lateral flow test strip that provides a rapid, affordable, and sensitive point-of-care device that can be distributed globally and operated without specialised expertise for certain types of cancer treatment. Professor Xu Weitao, along with PhD students Yang Huanqi and Wu Rucheng from the Department of Computer Science, received the Best Paper Award at the ACM International Workshop on Mobile Computing with Efficient and Interactive Foundation Models 2024, held on 18 November in Washington, D.C., US. Their paper, “TransCompressor: LLM-Powered Multimodal Data Compression for Smart Transportation,” introduces an innovative framework using large language models to efficiently compress and decompress multimodal transportation sensor data.
Lin Rong, a PhD student from EE, has been awarded the Student Award at the International Symposium on Imaging, Sensing, and Optical Memory 2024. Supervised by Professor Tsai Din-ping and Professor Chen Mu-ku from EE, her winning paper, titled “Tunable abrupt autofocusing meta-devices,” explores advanced optical technologies.
A paper titled “A Single-Source-Based Non-Isolated Micro-Inverter with Active Power Decoupling”, co-authored by EE’s Professor Henry Chung Shu-hung and scholars from Shanghai Maritime University, Aswan University in Egypt, and Aalborg University in Denmark, won the Second Prize Paper Award of the Power Electronics Technical Committee, Industrial Electronics Society. The award was presented at the Annual Conference of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society in Chicago in November 2024.
CityUHK has been honoured with the “Safety Performance Award – Outstanding” at the 23rd Hong Kong Occupational Safety & Health Award, organised by the Occupational Safety & Health Council.
