Summer Institute at HKIAS
The Summer Institute on Quality, Reliability and Data Science organised by the Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study (HKIAS), will offer a series of lectures and workshops between 16 and 22 May by renowned scholars and experts on emerging research topics. The event will include a Special Symposium on Quality, Reliability and Data Science in honour of President Way Kuo for his huge contributions to related research. For details, please visit here.
Commencement
The entire campus will celebrate the excellence of our graduating class of students at the College/School Commencement 2023 between 7 and 13 May at Wong Cheung Lo Hui Yuet Hall, LAU. All 34 sessions will be broadcast live through CityUtube and Tencent. Of particular note, this year will include the first graduates from CityU’s pioneering 6-year Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine programme. More information can be found here.
UNESCO regional training and research centre
The State Key Laboratory of Marine Pollution (SKLMP) will establish the first UNESCO regional training and research centre on coastal contaminant monitoring and marine innovative technologies in Hong Kong for the Western Pacific region. The aim is to promote marine environmental protection and sustainable development. The centre has been approved by the UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission Sub-Commission for the Western Pacific. SKLMP will become the 1st UNESCO regional training and research centre in Hong Kong, the 3rd in China, and the 6th in the Western Pacific region. The centre will also promote Hong Kong's integration into national development and support Hong Kong's goal of becoming an international innovation and technology hub.
‘Amber: Baltic Gold’ exhibition
The stunning exhibition “Amber: Baltic Gold” presented by at the Indra and Harry Banga Gallery, LAU has been extended to 31 May to allow more visitors to enjoy the 240 amber artworks on display. The exhibition traces amber’s diffusion across Europe from the Baltic regions to ancient Rome, and then down the famous Silk Road to China. Today amber is undergoing an aesthetic revival and is once again to attracting the attention of contemporary artists. For details, please visit here.
MoU between SEE and Great Eagle Group
Great Eagle Group has pledged to donate HK$1 million to establish the Great Eagle Group Scholarship in the School of Energy and Environment (SEE). It’s the largest donation that SEE has ever received. SEE and Great Eagle Group signed an MoU on scholarships on 20 April. The scholarship aims to help build a sustainable future by nurturing local talent in sustainable development, environmental management and energy science. The programme will provide 40 scholarships at HK$25,000 each to a maximum of eight SEE students each year, starting in 2022/23.
Kudos
Dr Alex Yu Xianghao, Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, has received the 2023 IEEE Communications Society Katherine Johnson Young Author Paper Award for a co-authored paper titled “Robust and secure wireless communications via intelligent reflecting surfaces”. The paper was published in the IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications, which is the top technical journal in the IEEE Communications Society.
A team of four CityU students from the College of Business (CB) produced an outstanding performance to win the HSBC/HKU Hong Kong Business Case Competition 2023 on 22 April against eight other local university teams. The CB students will represent Hong Kong in the Asia Pacific competition soon. Participating teams had to create a marketing proposal for a homegrown business in the competition. The judges commended the CityU team for its deep understanding of business cases and their knowledge of local as well as global trends.
