HK Tech Forum on Data Science and AI (DSAI)

World-renowned scholars in data science and AI will address challenging issues in driving data science and AI technology for the benefit of society at the HK Tech Forum on Data Science and AI where featured speakers include Turing Award winner Professor John Hopcroft, world-class AI entrepreneur Dr Lee Kai-Fu, and other world-leading scientists and technologists from the US and China. The forum aims to exchange new ideas and technological development among DSAI scholars in Hong Kong and the rest of the world. The Forum will be held online from 26 to 27 July. For more information about the HK Tech Forum on DSAI, please visit here.

International Conference at Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study (HKIAS)

Heterostructured materials (HSMs) represent an emerging class of materials composed of heterogeneous zones that have large differences in mechanical or physical properties. HSMs are expected to become a major field of scientific exploration in materials, mechanics, physics and computer simulation communities over the coming years. The International Conference on Heterostructured Materials held online and onsite through HKIAS from 12 to 15 July will focus on the fundamental science and technology of HSM. It will be the first such conference to focus on HSMs. For more information, visit here.

Appointment

Professor Zeng Xiaocheng has been appointed Chair Professor of Materials Chemistry and Chemical Engineering and concurrently Head of Department of Materials Science and Engineering effective from 6 July 2022. Kudos

Professor Ron Chen Guanrong, Chair Professor of the Department of Electrical Engineering (EE), and Professor Li Chengqing, a 2008 PhD graduate supervised by Professor Chen and working at Xiangtan University in Hunan province, have received the Guillemin-Cauer Best Paper Award 2022, awarded by IEEE Circuits and Systems Society. Their winning paper, co-authored with Feng Bingbing, a PhD student co-supervised by Professor Li, is titled “Dynamic Analysis of Digital Chaotic Maps via State-Mapping Networks”. The award, established in 1968, recognises the best paper published in IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems. Professor Chen previously received this award in 2005.

Dai Chenyue and Li Jiaqian, students from the Department of Computer Science (CS), teamed up with Huang Yixiao, student from EE, to win the Silver Medal in the 2022 ICPC Asia Kunming Regional Contest. Huang Yixiao was trained by Dr Albert Sung Chi-wan of EE and Mr Ting Chi-wang, Instructor of EE, under the ACM-ICPC Training Workshops organised by EE, while the competition was led by Professor Li Minming of CS. The contest, which was hosted by Kunming University of Science and Technology, attracted over 800 teams from over 300 universities in China, Hong Kong and Macau.

Six students and graduates of EE have won prizes at the 8th Hong Kong University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition in the category of Life Science and Information Technology. The supervisors from EE include Dr Sun Yanni, Associate Professor, Dr Leanne Chan Lai-hang, Associate Professor, and Dr Albert Sung Chi-wan, Associate Head and Associate Professor. The competition, which was organised by the Hong Kong New Generation Cultural Association, promotes innovation and entrepreneurship among the young generation.
