The President's Lecture: Excellence in Academia

Professor Zhou Dingxuan will consider deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) that are induced by convolutions at the next President's Lecture: Excellence in Academia. The convolutional architecture identifies essential differences between deep CNNs and classic neural networks. Professor Zhou will describe a mathematical theory for deep CNNs associated with rectified linear unit activation. The lecture will be conducted online on 11 November. Professor Zhou is Chair Professor and Associate Dean, School of Data Science; Chair Professor, Department of Mathematics; and Director, Liu Bie Ju Centre for Mathematical Sciences.

HKIAS Rising Star Lectures

Two online lectures in this series will be held this month. The first has three researchers discussing Materials Science on 5 November. Professor Lu Yang of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) will give a talk titled “Diamond Semiconductor: Deep Elastic Strain Engineering”; Dr Lei Dangyuan, Associate Professor of MSE, will discuss “Plasmonic Nanocavity for Light Manipulation and Energy Conversion”; and Dr Yang Tao, Assistant Professor of MSE, will explore “Chemically Complex Intermetallic Alloys: A New Frontier for Innovative Materials”.

On 24 November, the lectures will spotlight Life Sciences. They feature Dr Gigi Lo Pui-chi, Associate Professor, Department of Biomedical Sciences (BMS), with a talk titled “Development of Nanophotosensitizing Systems for Targeted Photodynamic Therapy”; Dr Zhang Liang, Assistant Professor of BMS, speaking on “Dissecting Protein Interactome in Health and Diseases”; and Dr Lai Kwok-on, Assistant Professor, Department of Neuroscience, focusing on “RNA Transport in Neuron and Why It Matters”.

Dialogue Series with Consuls General: Austria

Mr Karl Ernst, Austrian Consul General to Hong Kong and Macao, will explore opportunities for future studies and career development in Austria during his online talk on 18 November at the Dialogue Series with Consuls General. This series provides CityU students and staff with excellent opportunities to exchange ideas about the latest developments in a number of selected countries.
