New appointments
Professor Samuel Ho Mun-yin was appointed Head of the Department of Social and Behavioural Sciences from 15 January 2021. Professor Ho is an expert on traumatology, resilience and mental health issues, in particular depression and anxiety. Among his honours are The President's Award and Outstanding Supervisor Award in 2017 from CityU.
Professor Michael Tse Chi-kong has been named Associate Vice-President (Strategic Research) in the Office of the Vice-President (Research and Technology) from 20 January 2021. His remit includes enhancing the quality and quantity of high-impact research, strengthening strategic research areas, and promoting our research achievements and reputation.
Women in Science and Technology
A wide gender gap persists at all levels of STEM disciplines throughout the world. The Women in Science and Technology Seminar Series offers secondary school students, especially girls, information about STEM fields and how to infuse their STEM passions within a career. In the seminars, participants can interact with CityU female professors from computer science, civil engineering, chemistry, systems engineering, biomedical sciences, electrical engineering, and others. The first seminar will be held on 4 February titled “How to pursue a career in STEM?” and the second on 5 February titled “How to make an impact in STEM?” For more information, please visit here.

Dr Wang Cong, Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science (CS), has been elected Fellow of the prestigious Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers in the class of 2021 for his exceptional contributions to security of cloud storage and computation. The IEEE Grade of Fellow is conferred by the Board of Directors on a person with an extraordinary record of accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest.
A team of BSc Computer Science students comprising Dai Chenyue, Li Jiaqian and Xu Rui won the Silver Medal in the 45th International Collegiate Programming Contest - Asia Regional Contest (Jinan Site) 2020 held virtually in December 2020. The team’s supervisors were Professor Li Minming and Dr Kenneth Lee Ka-chun, Instructor, in CS. The same team received the Silver Medal in the 6th China Collegiate Programming Contest (Changchun Site) held virtually in November 2020.
A joint CS team with collaborators from Northeastern University, China won the Silver Prize in the 12th Challenge Cup — National Business Plan Competition for College Students; and the 6th China International College Students' “Internet +” Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition for their project “CombCure” under the supervision of Dr Li Shuaicheng, Associate Professor in CS. The team has developed a prototype for a cancer platform for doctors and patients with functions including Omics data analysis, data management, genetic data visualisation, medicine and treatment recommendation, and cloud-based consultation. Team members from CityU for the 12th Challenge Cup — National Business Plan Competition for College Students were Dr Chen Lingxi, 2020 PhD graduate, Li Chaohui BSc Computer Science student, and Li Shiying, PhD student. The team for the 6th China International College Students' “Internet +” Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition comprised Dr Chen Lingxi, 2020 PhD graduate, Li Shiying, PhD student, and Dr Zhao Zicheng, 2018 PhD graduate.
