THE rankings
Our teaching environment, citation impact and international outlook have combined to boost our world university ranking with Times Higher Education (THE) for 2019. We’ve scaled nine positions and been especially praised for attracting students, faculty and co-researchers from around the world.
HKIAS Distinguished Lectures
The Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study (HKIAS) is committed to educate leaders and managers who will contribute to shaping the future of our world. To achieve this ambitious goal, we offer students the best possible teaching and training. In October, two lectures tackle major issues in maths and macromolecular engineering. Professor Mok Ngai-ming, Edmund and Peggy Tse Professor in Mathematics and Chair of Mathematics in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Hong Kong, will deliver a talk titled “Curvature and Uniformization on Bounded Symmetric Domains” on 8 October (Monday).
Professor Krzysztof Matyjaszewski, J.C. Warner University Professor of Natural Sciences in the Department of Chemistry and the Center for Macromolecular Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University in the US, will deliver a talk titled “Macromolecular Engineering by Taming Free Radicals” on 24 October (Wednesday).

President’s Lecture Series: Excellence in Academia
Unprecedented device performance at low power, ultrafast information processing and efficient energy generation can be realised by engineering at the molecular level the shape, size, interactivity, interface and energy levels of organic and inorganic hybrid functional materials. These ideas will be explored in the next installment of the President’s Lecture Series: Excellence in Academia, which will be delivered by Professor Alex Jen Kwan-yue, Provost and Chair Professor of Chemistry and Materials Science at CityU, on 8 October. The title of the talk is “New Frontier for Organic/Hybrid Functional Materials and Devices: From Molecular Engineering to Technology Innovations”. For more information, please visit here.
City University Distinguished Lectures
Professor Lawrence Lessig, Roy L. Furman Professor of Law and Leadership at Harvard Law School, will describe the peculiar way that the idea of democracy has evolved in America, and the challenge that it creates for America and the world. The title of his talk, which takes place on 8 October, is “Democracy — with American characteristics”. For details, please visit here.
Professor J.N. Reddy, Oscar S Wyatt Endowed Chair Professor and Regents’ Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M University, will take participants on a personal retrospective of his journey through mechanics research and education. The lecture offers an overview of the speaker’s highly-cited shear deformation and layerwise theories for composite laminates, the least-squares finite element models of the flows of viscous incompressible fluids, and a robust shell finite element. The talk takes place on 12 October. For more details, please visit here.
“ANiMAL: Art Science Nature Society” Exhibition
This unique exhibition of animals presents to the public a fascinating blend of the old and the new, the classical and the modern, traditional art and high-tech creative media, drawing on the strengths of CityU and the rich artistic heritage of collections held at National Palace Museum (NPM) in Taipei. Titled “ANiMAL: Art Science Nature Society”, the exhibition is CityU and NPM’s third such collaborative project. It will be held from 16 October to 30 December 2018 at the CityU Exhibition Gallery.
CityU Career Festival 2018
Preparing our students for the world of work is a priority at CityU. The CityU Career Festival 2018 will present many options for students interested in pushing ahead their career plans. CityU was awarded 2nd place in the Best Career Services Satisfaction Award for the second year running and 3rd place in the Best University Brand Perception Award in the Universum Talent 2018 Survey. This was the first time for us to be placed 3rd in the latter award. In 2018, 4,004 Hong Kong students from CityU and other institutions entered the survey, which is well-recognised among employers worldwide.
Three PhD students from the Department of Electronic Engineering—Huang Weipei, Lyu Songyang and Xu Zhe—won 3rd prize in the Huawei Cup– IC Competition for Postgraduate Students in China. The awards are organised by the China Academic Degrees & Graduate Education Development Center and the Children & Youth Science Center of the China Association for Science and Technology. The winning project, supervised by Dr Ray Cheung Chak-chung, Associate Professor of EE, was titled “High Performance Hardware Architecture for Singular Spectrum Analysis of Hankel Tensors”. Altogether 254 teams submitted applications and 148 were selected for the final round. The CityU team was the only one from Hong Kong.
Dr Gavin Guanhao Feng, Assistant Professor in the Department of Management Sciences, won the 2018 AQR Insight Award for the paper “Taming the Factor Zoo” written with Professor Stefano Giglio of Yale University and Professor Dacheng Xiu of the University of Chicago. The AQR Insight Award, sponsored by AQR Capital Management, recognises exceptional academic papers that offer original, intelligent approaches to issues in the investment world. This year, two papers including “Taming the Factor Zoo” tied for first place, and the recipients share a US$100,000 prize.
