CityU Arts Festival 2017
To foster and promote cultural activities within the University, CityU Arts Festival 2017 offers a full range of artistic experience from 16 October to 10 November. The opening ceremony features the CityU Choir, the Pro-Musica Society of Hong Kong and the CityU Concert Singers in a performance of Yellow River Cantata; and the CityU Philharmonic Orchestra and Macao Orchestra in a performance of Jean Sibelius’ Violin Concerto in D minor. The opening concert will be held at Sha Tin Town Hall, and the other events at Wong Cheung Lo Hui Yuet Hall. For more information, please visit here.
CityU Distinguished Lectures
Professor James Curran, Professor of Communications at the University of London, will discuss important changes in the media landscape occurring as a result of new communications technology. His talk, part of the City University Distinguished Lecture Series, is titled “Media Transformation” and takes place on 6 October. For more information, please visit here.

The International Committee of Architectural Critics (CICA) has awarded the Bruno Zevi Book Award to Dr Charlie Xue Qiuli, Associate Professor of the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering, for his book Hong Kong Architecture 1945–2015: From Colonial to Global, which was published by Springer in 2016. The CICA Book Award, in association with the UIA World Congress of Architects, was set up in 1981 and is presented every three years. The awardees are architectural theorists and historians. Dr Xue is the first Asian author to win the award for the last 36 years.
Cui He, who is studying information engineering in the Department of Electronic Engineering, won the IET Prize 2017 from The Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET). IET’s vision is to inspire, inform and influence the global engineering community, and to support technology innovation to meet the needs of society. Cui He has a CGPA of 3.99 and was placed on the Dean’s List for five consecutive semesters.
Do Ka-yui and Tong Ka-yan, Year 3 students in Information Engineering in the Department of Electronic Engineering (EE), won the Special Inventor Award for their project titled “Figano” (an invisible musical instrument gadget consisting of a pair of gloves and an app) and the Turkish Inventors and Inventions Association (TUMMIAD) Special Award for another project called “Veinian” (the finger vein authenticator) at the 2017 International Invention Innovation Competition in Canada (iCAN 2017). The two winning projects, which were both supervised by Dr Ray Cheung Chak-chung, Associate Professor in EE, were awarded the Gold Award and Silver Award, respectively, at the preliminaries in order to enter the final round. iCAN 2017 showcases creative inventions, innovation projects and scientific research outcomes. The event this year attracted 415 applications from more than 30 countries, and 121 inventions were exhibited at the Finals. iCAN 2017 was organised by the Toronto International Society of Innovation & Advanced Skills.
The CityU Underwater Robotics Team won the Second Prize in the 10th International Underwater Robot Competition in Hefei, China. The team comprised Chan Peter, Cheng Yuk-shing and Tang Ka-chung of the Department of Electronic Engineering (EE), and Lam Wah-shing, Sze Tsz-ho and Yeung On-lik of the Department of Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering (MBE). Dr Ray Cheung Chak-chung, Associate Professor of EE, and Dr Shen Yajing, Assistant Professor of MBE, acted as the team’s supervisors.
