New appointments

Dr Chung Shui-ming has been appointed as the new Pro-Chancellor of CityU by the Chief Executive of the HKSAR. His term of office will run from 1 August 2016 until 31 July 2019. Dr Chung was Council Chairman from June 2006 to October 2008 and he has served as a Council member since 1998. He has been a member of the University Court since January 2014.

Chair Professor Zhang Longxi of the Department of Chinese and History has been elected as the President of the International Comparative Literature Association (ICLA) for a term of three years from 2016 to 2019. ICLA (or AICL in French) is an international scholarly organisation that was registered in Paris in 1956. Professor Zhang is the first Chinese person to hold the position. Throughout the ICLA's 60 years of history, all the Presidents have been distinguished scholars from Europe or America, except for one Japanese scholar.



IAS Workshop on Gene Dynamics and Chromosomes

Genome-wide sequencing studies have deciphered the genomic sequences of many species, and can further the understanding of gene functions, diseases and chromosomal interactions. Leading scientists will exchange their insights on the recent developments and the challenges in this field at a workshop on gene dynamics and chromosomes from 11 to 15 August organised by the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS). City University Distinguished Lecture Series

Professor Martha Nussbaum, Ernst Freund Distinguished Service Professor of Law and Ethics, University of Chicago, will talk about revolutionary justice and freedom movements in her talk titled “Anger and Revolutionary Justice” on 29 August as part of the City University Distinguished Lectures Series. Kudos

Wu Yunfei of the Department of Electronic Engineering (EE) has received the “Young Scientist Award” at the 21st Optoelectronics and Communications Conference/International Conference on Photonics in Switching (OECC/PS) 2016. The winning paper, supervised by Chair Professor Chiang Kin-seng of EE, was titled “Four-Mode-Selective Photonic Lantern Base on Two-Layer Polymer Waveguide Branches”.

Several EE students have been successful in the Institution of Engineering and Technology Hong Kong Young Professionals Exhibition & Competition 2016 (YPEC 2016). Cheng Chun-sing and Liu Chun-for were named Champions with the project “Smart Battery Condition Monitoring and Diagnostics System” supervised by Professor Henry Chung Shu-hung and Dr Ricky Lau Wing-hong, Associate Professor. Zhu Hongxu, supervised by Dr Tsang Kim-fung, Associate Professor, won the Second Runner-up award with the project “An Ultra-fast and Secure Beamforming Scheme for Next Generation Network”. 

Mr Chow Tak-shing, a graduate of the Department of Computer Science (CS), and Xu Yaohai, a student of CS, received the Third Prize in the “Challenge Cup” National Competition Hong Kong Regional Final – Hong Kong University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition 2016 in the Category of Innovation (Information Technology) for their project titled “Large-Scale Stylometric Database” supervised by Dr Sarana Nutanong, Assistant Professor in CS.
