Giuseppe Castiglione – Lang Shining New Media Art Exhibition
This exciting new exhibition about Giuseppe Castiglione (1688-1766), an Italian Jesuit missionary who was a highly influential painter at the imperial court for over 50 years, will combine historical works of art, new media and interactive art to create a compelling, multi-sensory, visitor experience. The Grand Opening, which will be held on 25 April, will be officiated by Dr Norman Leung Nai-pang, Pro-Chancellor of CityU, Mr Herman Hu Shao-ming, Chairman of CityU Council, Professor Way Kuo, CityU President, and Director Fung Ming-chu of the National Palace Museum (NPM) in Taipei.
The event marks the second collaboration on new-media art exhibitions between CityU and NPM. Castiglione was highly influential in the development of art in China. He produced many excellent works that fused techniques from Chinese and Western painting. The exhibition, to be held from 26 April to 31 July on 18/F, Academic 3, will present full-size facsimiles of Castiglione’s remarkable artworks alongside innovative digital interpretations.
New appointment
Ms Heronie Mok Wing-yee is the new Associate Vice-President (Chinese Mainland Affairs Office). She graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and subsequently obtained three master’s degrees: in Public Administration from the University of Hong Kong, and in Translation Studies and also in Common Law from her alma mater. Prior to joining CityU, Ms Mok was the Director of the Shenzhen Development Office, concurrently as Director of Planning of the Shenzhen campus and Associate Director of the Shenzhen Research Institute of the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
CityU Career Fair 2016
Over 2,500 participants are expected at the CityU Career Fair 2016 to be held from 13 to 14 April on campus. Information booths for organisations from various sectors will showcase career options for students, while recruitment and career talks will be conducted by invited industry practitioners. Zero Carbon Inno-Day: Sustainable Living 2016
A series of seminars, workshops, games and exhibitions aimed at encouraging the public to meet the challenges of climate change through innovative ideas will feature at an event titled “Zero Carbon Inno-Day: Sustainable Living 2016”. President’s Lecture Series: Excellence in Academia
Mangrove wetland, one of the three coastal wetland ecosystems in the tropics and subtropics, has important ecological and socioeconomic value. In this talk, Professor Nora Tam Fung-yee, Chair Professor at CityU’s Department of Biology and Chemistry and the Director of the Futian–CityU Mangrove R&D Centre, will discuss how mangroves tolerate and remove toxic contaminants, and explore the potential for developing constructed wetlands as a cost-effective and environmentally sound technology for wastewater treatment and bioremediation. France–Hong Kong Distinguished Lecture Series
What will happen in one million years to the planets in our solar system? And in one billion years? These questions, which have inspired some of the brightest mathematicians and physicists over the past centuries, will be the subject of a talk by Professor Cédric Villani, Fields Medalist (2010), Member of the French Academy of Sciences, and Professor at the Université Claude Bernard–Lyon I. CityU singers and musicians performed at several institutions during their Taiwan Music Cultural Exchange Tour 2016, including Soochow University, Taipei Medical University, National Chengchi University, Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School, National Taiwan Normal University and Tunghai University.

Dr Surya Deva, Associate Professor in the School of Law, has been appointed the Asia-Pacific representative of the United Nations Working Group on the issue of human rights and transnational corporations and other business enterprises. His primary research interests lie in business and human rights, corporate social responsibility, India-China constitutional law, and sustainable development. Dr Deva is one of the founding Editors-in-Chief of the Business and Human Rights Journal published by Cambridge University Press.
MPhil student Cheng Chun-sing of the Department of Electronic Engineering (EE) won the HKIE Project Competition 2016 “IoT Development for Smart Cities”. The winning project, co-supervised by Dr Ricky Lau Wing-hong, Associate Professor in EE, and Professor Henry Chung Shu-hung of EE, is called "Smart Battery Health Monitoring and Diagnostic System". The aim of the competition, which is organised by The HKIE Electronics Division, is to raise awareness and knowledge about IoT technologies and nurture engineers and students who can apply IoT technologies to improving the quality of life. In addition, in the same competition, Chi Haoran, a PhD student in EE, won the First Runner-up position with a project titled “Optimal Vents Design and Control Management for Indoor Air Quality Improvement in Green Buildings”, and Hung Faan-hei, also an EE PhD student, won the Second Runner-up title with “An Accurate Indoor Localization Technique”. Both projects were supervised by Dr Tsang Kim-fung, Associate Professor in EE.
Mr Abdulmecit Gungor, an Electronic and Communications Engineering graduate in 2015 from the Department of Electronic Engineering (EE), won the 2014-15 Best Final Year Energy Project Competition (Individual Project). The aim of the competition, which is organised by the Energy Institute (Hong Kong Branch), is to recognise the best final-year projects developed by university students in Hong Kong on the theme of energy. Mr Gungor’s award- winning effort, which was supervised by Professor Henry Chung Shu-hung (EE), is titled “3-D Transmitting Coil Structure with one Parallel Transformer Coil”.
Wang Yaochen, a final-year BEngECE student in the Department of Electronic Engineering (EE), was awarded the IEEE MTT-S Undergraduate/Pre-graduate Scholarship for Spring 2015 by the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society (MTT-S), US. This is the seventh time that an EE student has received this award. The winning proposal is titled "Transition Design for Active SIW Components" and was supervised by Professor Xue Quan of EE. IEEE MTT-S awards scholarships to undergraduate/pre-graduate students semi-annually to encourage interest in microwave and RF technologies.
The CityU rugby teams came top in the men’s championship and second in the women’s in the inter-collegiate rugby competition organised by the University Sports Federation of Hong Kong, China (USFHK). The success of our men’s team has enabled CityU to retain the Men’s Overall Champion’s title for the 2015-16 USFHK sports competitions.
