CityUHK Tiger Featured Talk - Turning Waste to Wealth: Accelerating Carbon Neutrality in Hong Kong

Speaker:  Professor Jason Lam Chun-Ho, Assistant Professor, School of Energy and Environment
Date:  19 November 2024 (Tuesday)
Time:  3:30 - 4:30 pm
Venue:  LT-12 Mr and Mrs Ho Chun Hung Lecture Theatre, YEUNG

Abstract

Turning waste into useful resources is crucial for Hong Kong, as this practice helps the city become more carbon neutral. With increasing waste production and insufficient landfill space, new ways to manage or upcycle waste should be considered. By transforming waste into valuable products, we can reduce what ends up in landfills and generate energy, useful materials, and other interesting products! This approach encourages a circular economy, where waste is treated as a resource instead of a burden.

In this talk, we will discuss some major types of solid waste, the concept of achieving carbon neutrality, and the opportunities and challenges of waste valorisation. As Hong Kong invests in better waste treatment technologies and engages the community, the practice of waste valorisation helps reduce environmental issues and supports the city's goal of carbon neutrality, leading to a cleaner and more sustainable urban environment.
