Achieving academic success and advancing in a professional field are often seen as indicators of a successful life. Vanco, an accounting professional who joined one of the "Big Four" accounting firms after graduating from City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK), followed this trajectory to success. However, his journey was not without obstacles. Vanco initially did not do well in the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE). Determined to overcome this setback, he committed himself to learning and eventually graduated with first-class honours in accounting, paving the way for a successful career.
During his secondary school years, Vanco had little interest in studying and was more focused on playing basketball. It was only after the HKCEE that he realised the importance of his future and decided to retake Form 5. With the support of dedicated teachers in his secondary school, Vanco developed a passion for accounting and economics. He spent countless hours studying and managed to return to his former school to continue to Form 6.
Vanco's dedication paid off when he achieved a B grade in the HKCEE accounting exam during Form 6. His A-Level results in economics and accounting were also impressive, exceeding his expectations. When choosing a university, Vanco decided to pursue accounting at CityUHK due to his interest in the field and the stability it offered for career development.
Throughout his university journey, Vanco not only mastered business theories and accounting knowledge but also had the opportunity to join the CityUHK basketball team. Winning the Intercollegiate Basketball Competition in his second year taught him valuable lessons in seizing opportunities, showcasing strengths, and managing time efficiently. The friendships he formed with his teammates and the coaches during this time continue to this day.
After university, Vanco received an offer from EY, one of the Big Four accounting firms. He attributes this opportunity to the team spirit he developed while playing basketball for CityUHK. The summer leadership training program at EY emphasised teamwork, and Vanco's ability to work well with others left a positive impression on the interviewers.
Vanco has also had the opportunity to give back to his alma mater by sharing his experiences with aspiring accounting professionals. He emphasises the importance of meticulousness, patience, discipline, proactivity, and effective time and work management in pursuing a career in accounting.
