From Inner Mongolia to Hong Kong to Cambridge, Professor Helen Bao's academic journey has been transformative, filled with challenges, growth, and invaluable lessons.
After completing her master's degree in statistics in Dalian, Prof Bao discovered the opportunities for practice-oriented innovative research and full scholarships at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK). Motivated by this, she moved to Hong Kong to pursue academic knowledge and enhance her research skills.
During her time at CityUHK, Prof Bao participated in the development of the Centa-City Leading Index, broadening her horizons through collaborations with the industry. Prof LK Chan, her mentor and the former Dean of the Faculty of Business (now College of Business), encouraged her to make use of university resources and professional knowledge. This hands-on experience laid a solid foundation for her future journey. Prof Bao's doctoral journey at CityUHK was guided by Prof Chan, who emphasised whole-personal development, including improving communication and public speaking skills. He also suggested that she learn Cantonese to better integrate into Hong Kong's life and university environment.
In 2005, an opportunity arose when Prof Bao met a professor from the University of Cambridge during a conference in Australia. She was invited to obtain a professor position at Cambridge due to her expertise in the Chinese housing market. Thrilled by the offer, she embarked on a journey of cultural integration and knowledge inheritance.
Prof Bao believes that her journey is not only a coincidence but also a result of CityUHK's international vision and resource investment. She now provides support and shares her experiences with research and master's students from mainland China studying at Cambridge. She is delighted that CityUHK has signed a memorandum of understanding with the University of Cambridge, promoting cooperation and exchanges in academia and other areas. She hopes to contribute to her alma mater through collaboration.
