Scholarships and Prizes
With a view to supporting students and in particular, encouraging Hong Kong students to conduct research in energy, a PhD fellowship scheme, research grants and research prizes are set up under the generous donation of the Ability R&D Limited. Details are as follows.

Ability R&D PhD Fellowship Scheme
- The fellowship scheme shall be known as the "Ability R&D PhD Fellowship Scheme" (能量研發博士研究生獎學金計劃).
- Each year, the fellowship will be given to a maximum of three PhD students admitted under the University Grants Committee (UGC) quota and conducting research in at least one of the following areas :
- Energy efficiency and conservation in cooling and heating systems;
- Energy recovery in air-conditioning systems; and
- Enhancement of indoor air quality.
- The value of each award shall be HKD5,000 per awardee per month paid on top of the regular studentship from the UGC. The maximum period of the PhD fellowship for each awardee is four years.
- Nominees must be holders of the Hong Kong Permanent Identity Card.
- Nominations shall be submitted by the supervisors of the eligible PhD candidates to the selection panel formed by the Ability R&D Energy Research Centre (AERC). Apart from the assessment of the nominees' academic achievements and other qualifications, an interview with all nominees shall be conducted to select the awardees.
- Nominations from the School of Energy and Environment shall reach the Student Development Services by the end of March and/or the end of June. The awards shall then be made as soon as possible.
- Successful awardees are required to achieve a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.5 or above as well as an outstanding research performance (to be assessed by the selection panel) each year for the continuation of the award.
- The School of Energy and Environment reserves the right to adjust the number of fellowship places and the award amount to be offered each year subject to the availability of funds and in consultation with the Ability R&D Limited if necessary.
Remark:
With an objective to nurture our students and to promote caring culture, the Community Relations Committee of the University Council has recommended that each award recipient is expected to make an annual donation of at least HK$200 to City University of Hong Kong for student support via CityU Alumni Club when they are in employment after graduation.This term has been incorporated into all scholarship/prize/award/bursary schemes, whether they are donated by external donors or contributed by University funding, with effect from February 2008.
Ability R&D Research Grants
- A research grant will be provided to support the research of each PhD student who is an awardee of the Ability R&D PhD Fellowship Scheme.
- The maximum value of the funding support for each successful awardee shall be HKD150,000 for his/her entire PhD research project. Expenditure items include equipment and consumables for research activities as well as participation in conferences, workshops and research visits.
- Under the guidance of the supervisors, applicants are required to submit a detailed proposal to the selection panel formed by the Ability R&D Energy Research Centre (AERC).
- Ability R&D Energy Research Centre (AERC) shall record the funding transactions in details.

With an objective to nurture our students and to promote caring culture, the Community Relations Committee of the University Council has recommended that each award recipient is expected to make an annual donation of at least HK$200 to City University of Hong Kong for student support via CityU Alumni Club when they are in employment after graduation.This term has been incorporated into all scholarship/prize/award/bursary schemes, whether they are donated by external donors or contributed by University funding, with effect from February 2008.
Ability R&D Research Prizes
- Research prizes shall be awarded to research degree students and undergraduate students who have conducted outstanding research in at least one of the following areas :
- Energy efficiency and conservation in cooling and heating systems;
- Energy recovery in air-conditioning systems; and
- Enhancement of indoor air quality.
- Only students (research degree or undergraduate) holding a Hong Kong Permanent Identity Card, are eligible for the prize.
- In each academic year (September to August), a maximum of three research degree students and three undergraduate students shall be awarded.
- For research degree students, the best three research papers published or accepted to be published in the top-tier SCI journals shall be selected. The awardees must be the first author of the paper and should have contributed over 50% of the paper.
- For undergraduate students, the best three final-year projects of the current academic year (September to August) shall be selected for the award.
- The value of each award shall be HKD20,000.
- Selection shall be conducted by the selection panel formed by the Ability R&D Energy Research Centre (AERC) at the end of Semester B of the current academic year.
- Selection results from the School of Energy and Environment shall reach the Student Development Services by the end of July each year. The awards shall then be made as soon as possible.
