What is Competency?

[Back]

.

Competent is defined as "suitable, having requisite or adequate ability or qualities". In selecting a model for practice, the worker must determine whether they have the necessary knowledge, understanding, and skills to make maximum use of the methodology for the benefit of the client system .

Simply knowing the theory is not sufficient competence

As stated by Hepworth and Larsen (1990, p.15), "competence embodies much more than possessing knowledge of practice theory; competent practitioners must be able to transform that knowledge into action."
