Prosroid: The Wheelchair Training Simulator

Prosroid, named by combining the words “Prosthetics” and “Android”, is a wheelchair training simulator. It is designed not only for new wheelchair users, but also for the general public. In this simulator, users attempt training scenarios by driving a motorised wheelchair. The simulator supports various display technologies including CAVE (Cave Automatic Virtual Environment)-like systems (with multiple projectors/screens) and virtual reality.

The simulator’s scenarios are based on real-life situations in Hong Kong. Users have a chance to deal with difficult situations that even experienced wheelchair users may have trouble with, such as slopes, narrow alleys, lifts and getting on and off public transport. This allows new users to practice indoors safely and build confidence before practicing outdoors.

We designed the simulator using Unity3D and constructed a set of training scenarios that simulate real-life conditions for users to learn how to properly drive a motorised wheelchair. A motorised wheelchair controller is physically connected to the virtual simulator to provide realistic controls for users. They can use the controller to move the virtual wheelchair in the simulator just as they would operate a real motorised wheelchair.
